Gestational Diabetes

Question
Hey all I was just wandering if any one has info on this subject... I was told Thursday I have GD Gestational Diabetes.. I went and bought a monitor, and test strips, lancets, and alchol swabs, like the doctor told me too... He told me I had to go on a special diet too...
I have never had this before with the other two whine bags that I have, I have no idea what might have caused this or what I did wrong.. I eat healthy, I try to anyways and I drink lots of water..
Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated..
Jody

Answer
Had it twice with our two. There's a chance your baby could be "very healthy" being slightly above average in weight.
This is something that is pregnancy related and usually goes away after the pregnancy ends. I my particular case, diet controlled the diabetes without further need for medical intervention.
Here's a site with some very good information, the majority of which I can relate to from experience:
More information on Gestational Diabetes
It is a temporary medical condition, very treatable with minimal sacrifices (we all know how giving up those cravings can be very sacrificial) It's good to hear your doctor caught this condition and you are taking your doctor advice and direction. This thread will be copied to the Medical forum. Please be sure to check there for any additional responses.

Jody -
Hi! To answer your question- during pregnancy, the hormones you produce that support the pregnancy work against insulin - and - that is when gestational diabetes occurs. As R-Rose said, it does typically go away after you have your baby. However, this means you have up to an 80% chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
If you have a chance between now and Friday - email me your height and weight and I can come up with a diet for you. I am a Registered Dietitian. I am having a c-section on Friday (my baby is breech!) but if you get this to me soon - I will try to help you out.
Good luck!

I need help with a diabetic diet for a patient who is 320# , 5'10" and is running sugars in the 400's. I cruised the net and couldn't find any decent diet plans.

Did some prelim numbers on your trucker - first goal weight should be at 288- or 10% of current weight. Clearly, 288 is still overweight - but much better than where they are now.
2nd - if possible - spread daily meals into 6 smaller meals. At each meal - they can (and should) have a minimum of 30 grams of carbs and a maximum of 45 grams of carbs. Add to that 6 oz of protein and unlimited green veggies (not fried, or cooked in butter!) and any unsweetened drink - plain coffee, plain tea, diet soda- can use artificial sweetners.
The most important thing for getting blood sugar under control is the amount of carbs and eating them throughout the day.
What foods have carbs? There are the obvious foods: potatoes, breads, "white" foods and the not so obvious: fruits and fruit juices, milk, yogurt, ice cream, beans and corn.
A serving of carb has 15 grams of carbs- so this patient of yours is supposed to have 30-45 grams per meal (alternately, you could say they are to have 2-3 carbs per meal). 1 carb serving (ie- 15 grams of carbs) is equal to: 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of milk, 1 tennis-ball size of fruit (like an apple or orange), 1/2 cup cooked pasta or cereal (like oatmeal) or beans. 1/3 cup cooked rice.
Juice: 1/2 cup (but should avoid - b/c raises blood sugar VERY fast).
Also, if you like frozen meals - just read the labels. Look for TOTAL CARBOHYDRATE and then look at the total grams. For example, most lean cuisines have 2-3 carb servings per meal. If you find a lean cuisine does not fill you up - then add a salad made up of green veggies and others like tomatoes, cucumbers, celery) to help fill you up.
These changes aren't easy- but often necessary!
Sample meals:
2 slices of toast, 1 cup milk, 3 eggs, 2 tablespoons peanut butter.
This meal has 3 carb servings (toast and milk), plus 6 oz of protein: milk, eggs, peanut butter.
If you do eat fried foods- remember, these foods are often breaded and breading counts toward your carb count!
If anyone has any questions regarding your own diet issues - or need clarification of the above (which - I understand - it's kind of complicated and there is so much to say - I tried to include a little of everything) please email me and I will be happy to get to you as soon as possible.
Again - in return - please visit my diabetes survey post. I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Thanks for asking - she was born 1/30/04 at 12:37pm, 7 lb 1 oz and 19 inches long. We've been back at home since Monday and everything is starting to fall into place. I'm sure that means something will change soon - but that's ok - this has been a lot of fun so far.
