Question
To those of you that know me personally, my teeth are messed up. Mostly because an Army dentist really F***'ed up big time when I had major dental work done when I was in the Army (my mouth was infected for many weeks after he got done "practicing" on me ). I vowed to never see a dentist again. Now I'm to the point where it hurts to eat or drink.
I know the "good, bad & ugly" of getting and having dentures.
Not long ago, I heard about "dental implants".
What can ya tell me about them?
Which way would you recommend? The dentures or the implants? And why????
Thank you!

Answer
I know that each tooth is implanted individually into the bone just as if they were rooted.
I know that the price is a great deal more than dentures.
Other than that....I'm in the dark. I've had dentures for 25 yrs and have had NO problems with mine so..I never investigated the implants.
Share with us any info that ya do find tho, ok?

I have two lower teeth that had root canals done and cut down. A stainless steel bar is placed (glued)over these two lower teeth. This helps keep the lower denture from shifting. The lower denture snaps onto this bar.
Uppers usually don't slip but lowers have little to grab onto, thus they tend to slip more.
I also had the Dentist put me under (anaesthesia) Count to ten backwards he says, I never made it to 5 and I was out like a light. I experienced no pain after they were removed.
If I remember, the Anaesthesia was $150.00 plus $750.00 to remove upper and lower's (except the two lower teeth.) Root canals I think were $250.00 each.
Implants are expensive, too expensive for me, and didn't seem worth all the time involved getting it done. Implants are not without complications either. There are some risk involved with implants.
I should have had my teeth removed years ago but like many, kept putting it off because of the expense. Like you, I was having real problems with pain and teeth starting to break. I was eating aspirin on the road.

I've had full uppers and lowers for years. Never had a problem with them. But, it is personal choice.

I have dentures, and they don't bother me either. As long as they sit quietly in their little container and don't chatter too much when it's cold.
The dentist wants another $400 to reline them so they'll fit right, and I haven't had it to spare. So I've been going naked - so to speak - chewingly challenged. No biters. It's annoying to not have teeth, and my smile has disappeared into a thin crescent of lips (who wants to advertise the fact that you've lost all your teeth?) I take burgers with no pickle, and diced onion only. I used to ask for the meat to be cut into bite size pieces (chicken sandwiches), but a few places thought I wanted the whole sandwich diced. I ate it with a fork.
I want some teeth in my mouth! I want to look and feel like the 23 1/2 year old I am (inside, anyway).

Absolutely no question.........IMPLANTS, And I would find a good dentist to take a good look at your teeth. But it's going to depend on the condition of your gums and your age.
When you lose teeth you lose bone mass in your mouth. Any dentist will tell you that he is very reluctant to extract any teeth for that reason. This in turn will distort the mouth if you lose most of your teeth, dentures are never the best option.
However implants are going to cost you, a lot more than dentures, but work with a good dentist and maybe you can pay as you go.
I used to date a Hygenist and she told me of horror stories about kids of 18 coming in with either rotten teeth or they just wanted them all out so they could have dentures. The reason??? Well my Mom had them out so she didn't have to bother with them!!! Duh!!
By the way, I'm 51, British, I say that because we have lousy dentists. I have excellent teeth and gums, but I have been willing to pay the price and do whatever it takes to do it No doubt the US has the most fantastic dentists, so for crying out loud, do the right thing, go implants and you will never regret it

Another situation.....don't be embarrassed by your plight. I just had my cleaning by a periodontist and she told me something interesting. That when you have so much bacteria in your mouth, it can create a problem with your heart and cause heart disease. My point is that is imperative that you take care of your teeth.
If you have any teeth left, then build around them with implants, dentures is the cheapest option but never the best. Don't prejudge your situation, because a good dentist can do amazing things with your teeth. Good luck.
