Pharmaceuticals and trucking - can I take my pills?

Question
Here's an interesting question, which I imagine will stir up mixed responses.
Can I take my Ritalin while out on the road in a large car?
I'm a 28 year old male with Attention Deficit Disorder. This is an ailment much debated by the masses who have little else to do, and many believe it's all a big joke. I myself admit that doctors have been a bit heavy handed in handing out prescription drugs to treat ADD/ADHD, but I've had a prescription since 1979. I've also had lots of testing done. I have ADD. It's not a bad thing in all ways, and not always a good thing for sure. Those of you who don't believe in the existance of this condition might respond here, but please remember the question: Can I still take my prescription medication and drive the truck?
Ritalin doesn't impair ability to operate a motor vehicle, but it is a stimulant. It is found often to be abused by young folks and adults as a sort of conciousness altering substance. While there has been no data to show that Ritalin (a.k.a. Methylphenidate) is an addictive narcotic, people do abuse it. Since it is a stimulant, based in some sort of amphetamine salts, I wonder if it's illegal to drive while using it.
I've never heard any drivers talk it up about ritalin on the road. It surprises me, because so many drivers out there talk on the CB about speed and other dangerous stimulants.
What's your take?

Answer
The first thing you need to do is have your physician write a statement indicating that he is aware of your condition and the job responsibilities of a commercial driver and That the condition nor the medication will not affect your ability to safely do this job.
He/She should further state that the medication you are on will cause a positive amphetamine result on your drug testing.
As a safeguard, have the Dr. issue a further statement regarding your sleep patterns. It may be of concern that the Ritalin will not allow you to sleep or rest as much as DOT regulations say you must.
Make several copies of this letter. Every time you apply for a job, present a copy and full explanation to the person conducting your interview.
Everytime you go for a DOT physical take a copy if this letter with you and give it to the examining physician.
You will find that some examiners and companies will accept this and hire you, some will not. It is going to be a judgement call on their part.
Good luck to you and please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Please let us know how this goes for you too.
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.
