Diabates>Needles and Pills

Question
Nurse Red, having trouble understanding whether a driver w/diabetes can "legally" drive a commercial motor vehicle. Is it until an injection is required to control the diabates OR is it when it is first diagnosed.
Reg391.41(3) STATES Has no medical history or clinical diagnosis......
Is the pill taken typically not a prescription for Diabetes only OR are their other uses for this medication? Am I reading all of this incorrectly?
Thanks for Your clarification of this issue.

Answer
You are NOT using insulin.
If you are recently a diagnosed diabetic, you must show proof of good control by whatever means (diet, exercise, pills) utilizing your most recent fasting blood sugars and possibly a hemoglobin A1C which shows long term control or lack of it.

Answer
I've read the notes about using insulin and being disqualified from driving, but I have a question...
..
I have a friend who has controlled his diabetes with diet and pills for several years. Recently he went for a check up and was prescribed insulin. A small amount [I'm told] but don't know the criteria. His Dr told him he is disqualified from driving, so he has parked his truck.
..
He now insists that there is an exemption that was sought by a UPS driver, won in court and as the diabetes is under control, the amount of insulin is very light [whatever that means], the UPS driver is now qualified to drive.
..
My question is: has anyone heard of this exemption or is it just another truck driver bull story? Any precedent, legal or medical, that can be sought after?
..
The shame of it is this guy just bought a new truck, has a solid future with the carrier he has been with for many years, but he is pretty much out of it. He said that the Dr told him he would report it to NJ's DMV and that he would be playing roulette to drive with the knowledge that he is disqualified.
..
Any help, opinions or advice would be appreciated.
..
Thanks
.

Answer
Dave,
Been driving for almost 20 yrs. In 95 became insulin dependent lost CDL, in 2000 Doctor put me on oral meds. was able to regain CDL. From what I was told ANY amount of insulin would disqualifiy you from holding a CDL. This is what CA. DMV told me. I dont know if any states have a statewide waiver for local driving but I know California doesnt.
It was broke when I got here, and so was IMarines stay and fight, Bush makes sure of that.

Answer
Is a disqulaifier. There are no waivers being issued.
A driver MAY be certified to drive INTRASTATE however.
There are new meds on the market these days that have allowed persons previously controlled only with insulin to resume control with oral meds.
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.

Answer
As I thought, but worth asking.

The Intrastate thing may work for him, so he can, perhaps, persue that.
