Answer
My XYL is an asthmatic and no-one in her immediate family has it, nor do our three daughters.
One of the many doctors we have seen has said that there is a ressesive gene that causes asthma and it does skip a generation or so.
I hate it for your daughter, asthma is no fun!!

Answer
It is hereditary no doubt. Don't panic though - I have it and went through the Army Basic Training with it.
You'd be smart, in my opinion, to keep a record of what triggers the attacks. Animals don't bother me nor do most flowers. Trees budding, Ragweed and certain grasses will drive me crazy.
Once you get it under control, the medical bills will ease up.

I have asthma and go through an inhaler about every other month or so, but the rest of my immediate family doesn't have even a trace of it. You can be the only one in the family with asthma. Just make sure she takes care of it properly, and that she takes her meds when she is supposed to in order to keep it under control. She should also remember to bring her inhaler with her when she leaves the house, otherwise she'll be frustrated all the time.
Animals don't bother me, neither does smoke, but dust and diesel fumes do, damn trucks...

PK - You may want to make sure it is truly asthma. It could be that she has an allergy instead. I had a very good friend who was being treated for asthma constantly with no results. Why? Because she told every Dr. she saw that she had already been diagnosed with asthma. Came to find out, she was allergic to her cat!!! Started getting treated for allergies instead of asthma and never had another 'asthma' attack... Just a thought.....

Have a second opinion or even a third...
Do NOT tell the other doctors what she "has".. let THEM determine whether or not it is asthma.
Of note tho... hubby was diagnosed last year with diabetes type 2... NO one in his family including grandparents.. had this. So.. perhaps it is a REALLY recessive gene that shows up after more than 1 or 2 generations.

I myself have it, and have since childhood. I had a period of about 10 years where I didn't have an attack at all, but it flared up again about '92 or so...it is NOT something to be taken lightly, as people have died from it (at least one during an athletic event, she died on the field).
The triggers for mine are generally physical labor, so if I know I'm going to be doing something like that, I take a couple puffs of my inhaler (Albuterol) and make sure I don't overdo it.
Though most attacks are of the hard to breathe variety, I have also had them come as fits of coughing. I would still be breathing normally for a bit, but start hacking away for no apparent reason.
Remembering to take the inhaler everwhere is hard to do, but it's like the saying goes "Best to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it".
