Question
I had open-heart surgery in 1965 when I was 6 yrs. old, I am now 44. Will having the surgery cause any problems getting my CDL. I have had physicals and stress tests over the years. No problems found during these tests.
Thanks
Chuck
Answer
My brother has had 2 bypass surgerys and he is still driving. As long as you can pass the physcial there should be no problem. He had his first heart attack while fueling the Truck.
But he later passed his physcial and was able to return to driving. His second one was at his daughters funeral. He was out of work almost a year but was able to return. That was 3 years ago and he is doing fine
Answer
A neighbor of mine is a O/O, had a triple bypass about 5 yrs.ago and at 66 yrs old still going strong. I would say discuss with your Dr.and as long as you can pass the DOT physical you should be good to go.Every ones situation is different.

In 99 I had Triple-bypass. Lost 6 wks work.
No problems, now thanks to DOT I have to do
the treadmill stress test plus if they want
they'll do a Cath. They tell me this has to
be done every 2yrs.
In Oct, 02 I did this ins.co.balked pd. some
but I still ended up having to shell out a
few thousand bucks. So when the next one comes
due, I'll have to change occupations, unless
the Ins co. will pay more, which I really doubt.

Answer
To actually communicate with your cardiologist to make the determination that you can drive.
But it's helpful if you go to the physical with copies of your medical record and the latest EKG for the DOT examiner to review.
That's the best way to go.
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.
