Answer
By getting a statement from the orthopedic surgeon indicating that he/she is aware of the physical requirements of your job as a Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator and that in his/her opinion you are able to safely perform that job and those duties.
You then must go to your State DOT office and apply for a waiver. They will request medical records and a whole host of other things before they make their decision.
Should they issue a waiver it may be a limited one, such as only day driving, intrastate driving only, requiring special equiment on the truck, etc.
Once you have that waiver, you must then find an employer who will accept it, any limitations of that waiver and/or driver capabilities. However....
If the waiver is issued and a driver is refused employment due to the handicapping condition, the American's with Disabilities Act comes into play. That is a whole different ball of wax and requires the advice of attorneys.
Good question, thanks for asking.
