Question
When my DH had his DOT physical today, he didn't list sample blood pressure medication (avalide 75mg) that his dr. had given him 3 days ago. His bp checked great; but now he's worried that he should have listed the medication - although it was samples only. Will something like bp medication show on a drug screen?
Answer
He is correct in thinking that he should have listed his medication. But it will NOT show up in a drug screen. DOT regs allow for the testing for 5 substances only. They are THC (Marijuana) PCP (animal tranquilizer) Cocaine, Amphetamines, and Opiates.
The medication he is taking does not contain any of these substances.
However, the need for medication to control blood pressure presents another obstacle in the physical exam and may lead to the need for a limited certification with more frequent re-examinations throughout his driving career.
