The Federal Trade Commission and deceptive weight loss adver

Question
The FTC is investigating and trying to put a stop to deceptive weight loss advertising. The kind of advertising they're talking about is the one where you pop a miracle pill, go to bed and wake up the next morning having lost 50 pounds. These advertisements are fallen for by many people who are desperate to lose weight, but have no time to cook and eat healthy food from the 4 groups (as opposed to McDonalds/Burger King) as well as exercise.

FTC Weight Loss Advertising Workshop
By the way (not trying to brag, BUT...) I have lost 50 lbs in the past year (around 30 since May) by doing strictly proper diet and exercise. The type of exercise I am still doing is running on the treadmill (soon to be the track, and street), using those rowing / skiing machines (lots of fun), weight lifting and certain back and abdominal exercises. My endurance level has skyrocketed, I am more energetic than ever before, and I don't sleep all day like I used to. Now if I could just stay motivated and keep it off.
This is the only secret to losing weight, and will always be no matter what. There will be no "so called miracle pill or drink" that you can pop and lose 50 pounds overnight. They are just scamming people out of their $$ by preying on the desperate.
One exercise program I have used before is (not trying to advertise) the 24/5 program at 24 Hour Fitness. They give you a personal trainer, and a diet. It's a bit on the high $$ side, but it's been worth it for me because they show you one on one how to exercise properly, and when the program ends, you don't because you do the same thing on your own.
!!!DO NOT EVER!!! believe anyone on any commercial that says you can't get into shape by exercising and dieting, because they are desperate for your money, and they will pull off anything no matter how illegal it is.
Any comments?
Erik.

Answer
Hi Eric-
I wanted to thank you for your comments on this board. I am a Registered Dietitian and all too often, I am having to pick up the pieces of someone who has already tried the "miracle cure" diets.
As I always remind people, if you need help - look for a professional - ask about their credentialing. For example, your trucking company would not hire anyone off the street without checking them out first, right? (hopefully!) Well- people should think the same way about anything they buy.
If someone is looking for a Registered Dietitian in their area, they can go to www.eatright.org. This is the website for the American Dietetic Association. Otherwise, a good commercial program is Weight Watchers.
Congratulations on your weight loss - and thanks again for helping fight weight loss fraud!
