Fasting before blood tests

Question
So how long should the big guy fast before a 9:00 a.m. blood test? 8 hours? 12 hours?
Is there anything we can do the day before to keep the blood sugar down?
Any "diabetic diet" links would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Clara (and Dick)

Answer
Avoid starchy foods, simple sugars, and stick with protiens and veggies. Some fruits are ok, but go easy as the body converts them into sugars as well.
Run a search on the American Diabetic Association. They have the most up to date info and diet management out there.

Answer
When they do the AC1 (I think that is what they call it...the glycohemoglobin test that gets an "average" of the last several weeks to see how good the control really is) my doctor doesn't want me to fast for more than 10 hours (and prefers I keep it as close to 8 as possible)as it throws my blood sugar out of wack. While it doesnt really effect the AC1 it does effect the current sugar levels big time.
I have a name not a number. I am not cheap but I am resonable.

Answer
Hi Clara-
I am a Registered Dietitian and Doctoral student in Texas. I am trying to find out more information on how to provide healthcare to truck drivers and their families. Could you tell me what you think would help you or other truck drivers to receive and implement health info - such as the "diabetic diet" you asked about? I could help you with that!?!?
Thanks-

Answer
Please jump in any time!!! Our members often ask about what types of foods they can easily access, keep and cook to lose weight.
Please feel free to start an entire new thread on this subject.
They need ideas for everything from soup to nuts!
Keep in mind that not all drivers have refrigeration (just coolers) or access to stoves or microwaves, so this takes some creativity.
I would love to have you put your experience and knowledge to this task.
Looking forward to seeing more of you in here.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! My uncle is a truck driver, so - I am not completely clueless- but I still need to know more about the needs of truck drivers and their families. In fact- I am also a doctoral student and am currently looking at conducting some research (possibly building on what Andrew Solomon has already done) on how to best provide nutrition and health info to truckers.
In fact, one of my projects this semester is to print all of the postings related to health and write a brief report on what the main health issues seem to be.
How's this - I have a piece that I have written on basic nutrition - anyone that would like that, please email me (the file is kind of big) - then I can create a few of the lists you suggest. All I ask in return is that people write back with comments, suggestions, questions and any info on their particular health issues or how my info has helped them. If I get enough feedback, maybe my profs. will let me turn this into a dissertation!
Again -thanks for the warm welcome- I think truckers are great and so I want to do what I can to keep them on the road!
