Question
Not sure if Marvin is reading the Medical Forum, I suggested he do so.
Answers here would be appreciated, as other's might also have the same question. And perhaps an e-mail to Marvin is also in order.

Answer
Marvin,
Explain to your eye doctor that your vision MUST be 20/40 in EACH eye and for both eyes together. If you are 20/50, you can get glasses or contacts and be certified to drive once your vision tests 20/40 or better with corrective lenses. Simple solution to getting you on the road soon.
In answer to your question as to why you must have better vision than someone who does not drive professionally.... These are the standards that have been set by the DOT. I do not know exactly how they arrived at that determination, but medical qualification standards are generally determined by a board of physicians that are consulted by the DOT for those purposes.
Keeping you safe, healthy, and on the road.
