Question
I believe I understand the drug part of this test, but not sure about the alcohol part. What exactly are they looking for? I haven't had a drink of alcohol in over nine years, but would like to have that option (not while operating a vehicle, of course). Thanks!
Answer
There have been drivers known to show up for orientation drunk as all get out. They are so dependedant on the booze that they are unable or unwilling to give it up for even short periods of time.
In all honesty the companies I have ever hired on with rarely went to the trouble of doing an alchhol test during the hiring process unless there was a reason to it, but you just never know. On the other hand any time you are involved in an accident in a CMV you will be given a drig and alcohol test and also companies have policies of random testing during your employment, and the only notification you may recieve is when you walk into the terminal and they tell you to go see someone immmediately and you get taken for the test on the spot.
I have a name not a number. I am not cheap but I am resonable.
Answer
The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) got a hold of it and raised cane. Alcoholism is a disease. And you can NOT deny someone a position because of illness. So pre-employment testing was dropped with in 6 months.
Drug addiction is a disease as well...(I know what your thinking) The difference is.....Alcohol is legal, drugs are not.
Alcohol testing can now only be done under the current regs in the following situations: Random,
Post-Accident, Reasonsable Suspicion, and follow-up testing.
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.

Answer
Wow, the ADA sure has a lot of power. I have had to deal with some of their nonsense in the past. I guess what Uturn said about drivers not being able to give up their alcohol makes sense. I suppose alcoholism is a disease, but many people use alcohol as a medication. To mask depression. Thanks again.
