Question
Nurse Red,
I have just been prescribed 5mg pills of the drug Plendil (felodipine). How will this affect my becoming an OTR driver? I am scheduled to start school on the 6th of September.
Answer
Argonaut,
Since you are just starting this medication, it will be very important over the next few weeks/months to closely monitor your blood pressure to be absolutley sure it is being maintained below 160/90.
The physician should make a record of this and provide to you a document stating that your hypertension is well controlled on this medication.
When you go for your DOT medical exam provide that documentation to the examiner. You should be issued a one year certification instead of the usual 2 year certification. That should be the only effect it has on your driving provided it continues to maintain you within the accepted parameters.
Good luck with your schooling.

OK....
Thanks Nurse Red! I will be certain to get something from the doctor stating that my hypertension is well under controll by using this medication.
Good Advice!!!!! I never would have thought about getting a document thus avoiding potential problems at the DOT physical.
