Response To Prohibited Presciptions

Question
I would like to respond to what Nurse Red said in her reply to Prohibited Prescriptions.
First off, I would like to say that I completely agree with most of what she said with the exception of precriptions that can make you drowsy. I speak here from both experience and that my wife is an RN. There are some precriptions that after a period of time do not have many, if any, side effects. I say this in defense of drivers that have been taking drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft and other Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors. After the initial taking of these drugs, many of the side effects subside. My personal experience is that I do not feel sleepy or really have any noticable side effects from taking Zoloft (50 mg once per day). I do take the prescription at night before I go to sleep, which may have something to do with it.
I feel that this needs to be said. I also feel that carriers and their insurance providers should make an effort to become more educated on these type of drugs. There are many happier people out there that have been taking these drugs and are leading much more fulfilling lives because of them. Just my 2 pennies.

Answer
Unfortunately there is no way to determine whether it will or will not a make someone drowsy, or if and when the drowsiness will subside. Each person is different in their response to a particular medication and the variables are too difficult (if not impossible) to predict. That is why some companies just will not hire a driver on those types of meds at all.

Answer
what drugs are tested for and generally how long do they stay in ones system?

Answer
if company says no on a type of drug but not listed in DOT reg do they have to hire you anyway?
Who could help me there?

Answer
thanks

Answer
are listed in the other thread for you.
Some companies have a company policy or an insurance company that dictates that some types of drugs are not acceptable if you will be driving for them. A statement from your Dr. indicating that he/she is aware of the job responsibilites of a CMV driver and in their opinion the medication you are prescribed will not affect your ability to safely operate a CMV, may help you get around that obstacle.
Have the letter before you go for the DOT medical exam
