Question
There seems to be a lot of questions about what drugs you cannot use while driving. I asked this a couple of weeks ago & you showed me where to go on the net. Never did found the listing of Banned Drugs in the FMCSR’s. If you could direct the Truck Net Members to a Web site page that show’s the list of Drugs you cannot use while driving a CMV, I & other Truck Net Members will be grateful.Thank You.
Answer
I've never posted a list because an official list does not exist to my knowledge. Everyone thinks it does, but it doesn't. Maybe I should add this to Opie's list of Myths.
But here's the skinny on meds that will not allow you to drive while on them.
Anything containing Opiates.
These are most of your heavy duty pain medications. Percocet, Percodan, Vicodan,Morphine, Demerol, Oxycontin, Tylenol #3, and anything containing Codiene.
Amphetamines are usually related to dietary aids and are not allowed in any form.
Cocaine-Not currently used for medicinal purposes.
The same goes for Marijuana, and PCP.
You may also find yourself disqualified to drive on any other medication that has the ability to make you drowsy, or otherwise affect your reaction time or judgement.
Hope this answers your question.

Thank You for your quick response. You gave the answer I was looking for.
Answer
The safest thing I can suggest is telling your doctor you are a DOT driver and ask him if the prescription they are giving you is allowed by DOT. To be even safer I always ask our clinic we send our drivers to for tersting and physicals.
Answer
Most private physicians do NOT have a CLUE about the DOT regs. What they perceive as "Okay" is often not allowed under the regs. What you must ask your physician for is a statement indicating that they are familiar with your job responsibilities and that, in their opinion, you are safe to operate a commercial motor vehicle.
It is the DRIVER'S responsibility to notify the employer if they are on medication, this allows the employer to determine if they will allow you to drive on that medication.
Make sure you document all communication. Because if you have an accident or get popped for a random and get a positive result, most companies will hang the driver out to dry. But if they were notified and approved you to drive, and you have it documented, the responsibility falls back on them.

Answer
Sorry Nurse Red I should have been more specific about calling our company clinic and asking the company doctor. Maybe my own personal physician has had experince in DOT field. He has answered different questions for me before. I still don't think it's a bad idea to tell your own doctor what you do and that you have random drug testing done. Most of my guys will ask me if they are not sure.
Answer
You stated that it is the driver's job to inform the company of the drugs you are taking. This way the company can make a decision as on you ability to drive. If possible, can you point in the direction of the FMCSR'S the chapter & verse that compels a driver to disclose this information? Thank You.
Answer
382.213 spells out driver responsibilities. Like I said before if you think you are taking something you need to put yourself out of service.
382.107 has definitions for you
392.4 drugs and other substances
It is your responsibility not to report for a safety sensitive function according to DOT.
