Question
We haul for Owens Corning and Certainteed and are required to tailgate this.
While doing so the trailer fills up with fibers and I'm wondering what the health risks of breathing these fibers are?
I try to stay away from this **** as much as possible, but every once in a while I get stuck with one. The summer time it is worse than ever.
Are these insulation companies supposed to tell us if there are health risks involved?

But Dean & Robin, Bob Vila, and the rest of the TV home improvement folks always always always wear a mask when dealing with this stuff.
I would ask the receiver for a mask, even if it's just one of those flimsy ones. That, and ask for the Material Safety Data Sheet for the product, if there is one available.

I used to haul the stuff, and it would get into my eyes, under my skin and in my throat. The last time I tailgated FGI, I was sick for the rest of the day with a high fever and the runs worse than any other time. I don't know whether it was from the load (unintended pun) or something else, but I told dispatch from that day on I would not be touching FGI. They didn't like it, but I didn't like it either.
Rose, can this topic be copied (not moved) to the medical forum?

Used to haul that stuff for Owens-Corning out of Barrington, NJ and hated it. Back then they didnt even put the rolls in plastic like they do now. By the time I had tail-gated the load, I felt like I had the flu. Had to find the nearest place to shower.

PK,
I use to work with installation all the time and it was nasty stuff. I wore paper suite (disposable), gloves and a mask to keep from getting it on me ..used to cause a rash on my arms. I have also unloaded a trailer or two of the stuff during the summer ..not fun at all when your covered up.

Answer
Aren't they (my employer) supposed to tell us when we are being exposed to cancer causing products and shouldn't they provide us with resperators or masks.
Should there be something posted on the safety board and we should be told of this fact in orientation.

What are you guys looking for a free ride? Get your lawyer and get rich from some stupid law suit?
I hauled insulation for the 5 major companies in the west from 1968 thru 1979. We unloaded every bag. Sure it was unconfortable, but that was the job. I just finished 2 months of mean physicals and testing at a VA hospital. There isn't a damn thing wrong with me, except I broke my pelvic and a vertibrea at some time in my sordid life, and I am 69 years old.
I guess if you can't stand the heat get out of lthe fire!
