Question
I took a drug screen last week and they said my sample was too diluted.
What is this all about? I have to go back in and re-test which is no problem, but I'm wondering if my new year diet plan caused this.
No, I didn't dip the bottle in the toilet. They blued the water. I have been drinking four to six large bottles of water a day along with limited red meat and no taters, pastas and so on. I have lost 12 pounds so far. Even switched to Bud light...lol
Now what I'm wondering is has drinking so much water caused a dilution of the sample? I have noticed in the past that they will only allow you so much water if you caint go. I imagine this is to avoid dilution.

Answer
The water did it to ya.
I run UAs in my job as in a veterinary clinic so have no exp. with drug screening but I would guess that it would have to be a certain concentration with X amount of material in it to register appropriately.
Just a half educated guess. Hopefully someone else has some better info.

Answer
Depending upon what type of test is being used it most likely is the amount of water you are drinking. The cheap and dirty tests are usually a ph, litmus type test. If you are downing lots of water it will flow right through you and skew the concentration of waste products to water. The test "standard" makes the examiner assume the sample was diluted. False positive and false negative tests are a frequent with these test. This test is cheap and easy to administer.
The next type of common test is the thin layer chromatography. This test determines content by Color separation of chemical components; capillary action establishes a distinctive pattern for each drug. It has the advantage of being low cost, easy to administer and it tests for multiple drugs. Disadvantages are Other chemicals may produce "false positives," low accuracy may produce "false negatives," chemical masking agents may reduce accuracy and minimize chance of detection
Finally there is gas chromatograph / mass spectrometry (GC/MS). This is an expensive and very accurate test that can detect all drugs and masking agents. When performed correctly there is no chance of false positive

The one retest is the ONLY one allowed. They cannot retest for that reason again. A second dilute specimen must be accepted as reported (Negative or Positive). This is a new regulation. Prior to this year, a dilute specimen could not be retested at all.
This is all determined by the PH, Creatinine and Specific Gravity of a DOT urine test.
Sorry for the slow delay in answering, was away from office yesterday.
Countie Mountie...Dear....ummmm the GCMS and Emit Assays have NOTHING to do with dilution. Drug ID only.

I take between 1 to 2 lasix per day depending on what i ate and thats not much but sometimes some foods have msg or high sodium contents in the food.
I also just had a drug test and my urine was so light colored i was surprised because before i had weight lose surgery i hardly drank water but now i drink between 1 gallon and 1 & 1/2 gallons every day, i carry around with me a 1 liter bottle when i go out, people look at me like its my baby bottle but it helps me shed weight
I never had any problems with swift or the clinic where the o/o employer sent me to for the new drug test and they cannot refuse your urine as nurse red stated.
