Return After Heart Attack

Question
I have had 2 per sey heart attacks, no warnings, just pain and their I go. I had angioplasty and a stent placed in 1999 after being released by my cardiologist in 6 wks, I seen the company Dr. he said by DOT Regulations I could not return for 90 days and that it was mandatory. No one seems to know where he got the law .. or statue number. Does anyone know ?? Also my short term disability pay stopped after 6 wks . ans so I sat with no income for the remainder of the time. Was I entitled to un-employment ? I was willing and able to work ?

Answer
The GUIDELINES recommended by a board of physician's that the DOT would prefer be adhered to in situations such as your. They are not regulations (per se)but most companies abide by them.
This additional time allows for the treatment to do it's full job, then for the physician to conduct follow up testing (such as EKG, stress testing, or echocardiogram) in order to document that the condition has resolved or stabilized.
You may want to check on any loans you have to see if you have a disability insurance clause. Many loans carry this and the person isn't even aware of it. It allows for your payment s to be made for you when you are out of work like this.
Check into it.
You may also ask your company if they would consider using you temporarily as a dispatcher or yard jockey until you are certified to return to driving.
Good luck to you.
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.
