Question
My hubby has been told his hip is bone on bone and he is in need of a total hip replacement. The surgeon he is seeing refuses to do the surgery until he loses weight claiming that the hip will last longer. To his credit he has tried very hard to lose weight but it just isn't coming off. He cannot exercise because of the hip. (per docs orders) I feel so bad watching him come home from work everyday (he came off the road and now drives locally hauling waste to and from a transfer station) limping and in pain. Any one have any ideas as to how he can take off the weight? He is so worried about all of this as we will have no income as he recuparates, the stress is hard on him and I worry that he will choose not to have the surgery until he can no longer walk. Any one no of any help ot there for drivers?
Answer
I know exactly what he is going thru. I have not been able to exercise because of a bad knee that I had rebuilt, but can't have the replacement surgery until some of the weight goes. I can't even walk the dog!
I have no fast answers for you here. If he can try to do some upper body exercises to help burn calories and cut back on the fat and calorie intake it will help, but it is a long slow process.

I had my knee replaced Jan. 2000. I'm 47, and I only wished I had done it sooner. Most surgeons are reluctant to do replacement surgery on people our age, but not all. If your not comfortable with the answers your getting, consult another Doctor.
My replacement was my 9th surgery. All had been done that was possible. We had decided that when it got to the point that pain-killers had to be involved, we would replace. I'm still driving a truck, playing golf, riding my motorcycle, everything I was doing before, only minus the pain.
Will I have to have it done again, yes, probably in 10 to 12 years, but I'll deal with it at that point. I lost 25 lbs post surgery, and I'm making an honest effort to keep it off. It's hard to do, especially when I'm on the road. The best and only way that works for me is, I gotta burn more calories than I consume.

That's good info and some I may be using in the near future. Seems I did some more damage to the knee over the T'giving holiday. All I did was change direction while walking. On flat level surface yet! Now the knee is very unstable and tends to hyperextend when I am tired.
I really dread going thru another surgery. I hate sitting still even for short periods!

A friend of mine, who had a bad hip,and had to have surgery, but needed to drop weight firstgot an excersise bike ,but only peddled with the unaffected leg....seemed to work...lost the weight. Also might keep in mind that fluids are needed to flush the system of burned calories. So you need to really hit the ol water bottle...not tea,not coffee, not gator aid,not diet sodas,....WATER !!!!
