Question
Dear all truckers nation wide,
In all my 27 years of being alive I never thought that I would have to ask for help, from someone other than my family. But today I must, I know that alot will leave this message after they see that. But hopefully some will still read on. Ny reason is not soley for help for myself, but maybe I can help someone else too. On August 1 of this year I was forced to take my 61 year old dad to the emergency room. At that time we both thought that what he had was a bad flu that he could not shake. To both of our amazements it was worse than that. We were told through the doctors that he had blood clots in his lungs. In their own words they are huge blood clots. They then admitted him into the hospital, where he stayed for 6 days. At the end of 6 days they sent him home. He was at home for 4 days and again had to go to the emergency room again, thi time they told us his blood clots in his lungs had grown and he also had blood clots in his legs. The doctors have said that this can be more common with truckdrivers and people who smoke. Well needless to say he has that double wammy. Why I am writing today is to ask for help, my father cannot work ever again, in this line of work. But we all know that at his age fiding anything else it would be a miracle. My father being an owner-operator, money is tight now. We are hoping that assistance can take care odf the bills. But now it is all in waiting. He needs to sell his truck and wait for social security to possibly help. So I am writing this letter to let people know about this problem. Watch out for signs of problems and don't just ignore them and keep on trucking. Go to a doctor and find out especially if you are winded when you walk or if you have problems walking or your legs swell up. GO GET CHECKED, maybe it will be nothing but it could also save your life. The doctors say that blood clots in the lungs are usually fatal. My other reason for writing this is to see if anyone out there could help. If so write me. Thank you for your time.
Answer
I read the entire thing.
Sorry to hear the bad news.
Just to let you know, doctors like to paint the picture as black as possible for some reason.
Blood clots will form in any body regardless of what they do for a living.
Regardless of the fact if they smoke or not.
We never know when a simple thing will turn ugly.
The previous christmas I had a severe chest pain attack. Extremely difficult to breathe. Couldn't work because of it. I was about to check into the doctor's office when it cleared up.
Cause? Me thinks it had to do with my in-law's batch of fudge she made for me and the excessive amount of nuts she put into it.
So I do watch myself fairly closely.
As for helping out personally, I'd like to, but I'm not in any position to do so right now.
Perhaps others in trucknet are.
Keep us posted.
come on over y'all
Answer
Things aren't going well for your Dad.
What signs did he experience other than the flu-like symptoms?
Smoking and a sedentary lifestyle are risk factors for blood clots, but there are so many other things that can contribute as well.
As we age, the body just does some strange things. One of my staff had a broken ankle a year ago. It required surgery on an in and out basis. # days after being home, she too, developed blood clots and required hospitalization. She was only 40 and a non-smoker. But she was overweight and didn't get much exercise.
Hope things get better for your family very soon.
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.
