Question
I'd like to start school in the next 30-45 days, but I'm concerned about a previous medical condition, and whether it will disqualify me from the industry.
I'm what's typically referred to as a "recovering alcoholic" -- I received medical treatment over fifteen years ago and haven't touched a drop of alcohol since.
Prior to seeking treatment, I experienced a "loss of consciousness" or, what the doctor termed it, "ideopathic seizure". By the very definition of "ideopathic", nobody had any idea what triggered the seizure. At the time, the doctor notified the DMV and my class C drivers license was suspended for a few months. I had no further incidents of "loss of consciousness" and my license was reinstated. I have had no further medical problems and my DMV record for the past 15 years has been spotless.
Will I be able to qualify for a CDL, and will companies be interested in me?
Answer
The only thing that can stop you from obtaining your physical card is if you are currently taking seizure control medications ( as with other perscibe medications). The first thing you should do is go to a occupational Doctor's office and have a physical (DOT) done. If you are able to past the physical, then go get your CDL by way of school or company sponsor school. This way you are only out of pocket cost to you is the physical should you are unable to obtain the medical card. Good luck.

Wow -- I've been sweating the answer all weekend. Sounds like I will not have a problem since I have been taking no medication of any kind (and have had no health problems) since 1986.
Your suggestion about getting a DOT physical in advance makes excellent sense.
Thanks for the good news and the advice!
