question for nurse red: xanax and doxepin

Question
nurse red,I draw social security disability. I take 2 different medications..xanax...up to 4 milligrams a day..and doxepin..an antidepressant..100 milligrams a day. I have been classified with..major depressive disorder and agoraphobia.I used to drive over the road 20 years ago. I hauled produce coast to coast. I would like to give trucking another try. My question is this. Is xanax and doxepin automatic disqualifiers for driving otr? I have contacted 10 different trucking companies, concerning these 2 medications.5 companies told me that xanax is not a disqualifier, but they didn't like the idea of me taking doxepin..I would probably have to stop taking that medication..the other 5 companies told me there is no way they would hire me..If I took xanax or doxepin. Why would half the companies I talked to would hire me, but the other half wouldn't? Don't all trucking companies have to go by the same guidelines, concerning medications?

Answer
For my slow response. My home puter caught a virus and is out of commission. So I had to wait until I came to the office this morning to respond to you.
The regs set forth by the DOT are minimum standards only. Companies may tighten up those regs of their own accord provided they have a written policy covering it.
Recently the ADA filed suit against JB hunt for discriminating against drivers on certain medications. Much like the ones you are describing. However, you must have written documentation from the prescribing physician indicating that he/she is aware of the responsibilities of a commercial vehicle operator and in their opinion, this medication does not affect your ability to perform those job requirements safely.
The insurance companies have a say in the matter as well, which is why some companies differ.
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.

Answer
for the information you have shared with me concerning these 2 medications. Now I understand the reason some companies will hire me and other ones won't. Hope you get that virus out of your computer soon.
