Last nite I had the worst scare of my life. I have had a bad cold for over a month so i wasn't too concerned about it when I went in to work.
After the obligatory paperwork was done i went out to hook up. While cranking dolly legs, I started to cough, only I couldn't stop. Then i got really light headed.
Self, I said, this isn't right. I left truck in yard and went to the hospital, figuring they'd say "just a cold, take some stuff, rest forget about it"
Surprise, I got "are you a smoker". Yes. "You have emphysema, quit smoking you or you are going to die!"
Then the shock off being shown how to use inhalers
antibiotics, and a whole new lifestyle facing me.
I never thought It would happen to me. Surprise!
NOW, anyone got any ideas on keeping away from smokes, while driving. The first thing I did before I turned the key was lite up.( I threw the things away at 8pm last nite. 16 hrs later I
am suffering withdrawel, but surprisingly not to bad)
For the rest of you, give up smoking soon. IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU!!!! -->

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I guess I am lucky. I quit smoking on April 7th after 40 years of smoking. My doctor put me on Zyban to help me quit. It is really an antidepressant, called Wellbutrin. It's marketed as Zyban for smoking cessation. But it's exactly the same, made by same co. & everything. The packaging is all that's different. But it really helped to curb the craving. My wife and I quit the same day; she quit cold-turkey (without the Zyban). Her withdrawal seemed to be more severe than mine. On the use of stop smoking aids that are available. Before I went to RX's I would try the less expensive things such as the patches and gums.
Zyban when prescribed for smoking addiction is expensive and many insurances will not cover it. BUT.......AHEM!!!If your Dr. prescribes Wellbutrin for mild depressions like symptoms, you will find it cheaper and insurance will most likely pay......AHEM!!!!
One more thing.....Excessive coughing for extended periods can also cause pressure on an area referred to as the Vagal nerve. This nerve can actually affect the rhythym of your heart, not just the rate. The inhalers should help with that cough.

Just thought youèd all like to know, It has been 4 days and 10 hours since I threw the smokes away, and went cold turkey. So far so good. NOW, if I just could stop eating....
The Dr. told me about the coughing effects, Nurse Red. Thanks. The inhalers are working and I feel a whole lot better today than I did 5 days ago.
If I knew 30 years ago what I know now.........
