My daughter had it a couple of years ago....took about three months to get face working again...but she is fine now. I will see if I can get her to post a little more about it...
90% of the time the paralysis goes completely away...........and try not to worry about the other 10%

....I woke up on a Saturday mornin' if my memory serves me correctly, my face felt tingly, but I chalked it to sleeping on my hand agin. Jessica, asked if we could go to McDonalds for break fast and I agreed. As we were sittin' in the car eating, she said "Mom you're bleeding...." I guess I had bitten my tongue on the left side and hadn't even realized it.....oh well, no big deal...any way went the reast of th day feeling fine, with thexception of my face feelin' tingly.
Woke up sunday morning, like any other went into the bathroom, and went to brush my teeth...then it hit me....I couldnt open my mouth on the left side, nor blink my eye, smile nothin', hell i count even smoke a cigarette(which bothered me far more than anything else at this point, til I tried to drink a coffee, and as quick as i could get it into the right side of my mouth it would drain out the left as I couldnt kept it shut)hmmm....ok This is irratating...so I called mom....who thought I had a stroke.....anyway off to the ER we go, and after some test and about 3 hours, came to find out I was suffering from "Bells Palsey".......thinking my face was only the begining of the paralysis, I started to cry......no body could answer any quiestions: how I got it(later I found out it is a stress realted condition), if it would go away, if so how long....so they game me a prescription and sent me on my way.....Mom, went to work on the Net, trying to answer my questions.......and found what she was lookin for.....it took about 3 months for all the symptoms to subside.....and i was sure glad to be able to sleep without having to tape my eye shut anymore.........:-)

Well...today I can whistle !!! the Dr. said to figure out what I couldn't do...then every day,try it,and when I can do some things then I will know I'm on the mend......
My Dr. also took the approach I requested...he agreed to treat what we thought was what triggered the Bell's Palsy....Lymes disease, and stress, and inlfamation of the facial nerve. So i'm taking 3000mg amoxicillin for the lymes,1800mg ibuprophen for the inflamation, and 25mg vistaril for the stress.......
Sounds like a wierd combination...but since the medication that the ressearch suggested had only a 50/50 success rate...I decided we couldn't get any worse odds goin out on our own.....
So wish me luck....this healing my be due to the nature of the beast, the odd ball treatment, or the fact that I'm getting back in tune with myself and tryin to mellow.....

Dear MedicineWoman,
I had Bell's Palsy 24 years ago and I am happy to say that I made a complete recovery. The doctor treated the condition with a course of steroids and within 3 weeks I had almost complete return of function. There is no visual residue of paralysis. They also used some electrical stimulation of my facial nerve to keep the muscle tone until the paralysis went away. I woke up one morning and tried to drink a cup of coffee without much success. It was rather funny at the time, but I do remember my husband asking me not to stare at him. Of course I couldn't close my eye! Of interest is that my father and sister also had Bell's Palsy. I don't believe it is known what causes this problem. But good luck to you and I'm sure you will be back as good as new soon.

My puter has had it's own palsey.
You will be happy to know that it is self limiting. Meaning that the symptoms do go away on their own. Steroids do seem to hurry that along in more severe cases tho.
It does seem to be stress related, but that is about all that is known. It does seem to affect women more than men. Symptoms can last from 3 days to a year or more. Rarely there are times when recovery is less than complete, but that is RARE.
Glad to hear you are on the mend. Is there anything else you HAVEN"T subjected yourself to lately??? Sheesh!
Keeping you safe, healthy and on the road.
