Question
Hey folks.
My wife and i have been reading your forums for the past 9 months or so. We are thinking of running hub/wife team.
but before get more involved i have a quick question about the D.O.T. physical concerning color blindness.
I can distinguish colors with no problems at all, during day and at night. But once doctors show me those flash cards with numbers or drawings I'll fail them. I probably get three out of ten.
Will this create a problem fot O.T.R. even though I see and distiguish all traffic device colors?
Thnx.

Answer
Hi!
I have had no problems with that! They just
want you to be able to tell the diff between the
colors of red,green@yellow! I am blue-green C/B
Red is red to me but green is white to me.
First time I found out was when I took test for
School Bus dr. Had no problems there either!
Good Luck,
Chuckie

I have never seen a single number in those charts. When I enlisted in the Army in 1963, I accused the medic of screwing with me! "There ain't NO numbers on those pages, why are you saying there are?"
That is when I learned my "differences" all through school was color blindness.
Primary colors, red, blue, green I can see, most pastels simply do not exist for me.
You should have been a mouse in the corner the day I explained to my wife that I liked her pretty new BLUE undies. Sheeze .... she still insists they were GREEN!
The tester will only require you to see three objects that are R/B/G ... such as a pencil or colored disks. That is all required by the regulations.

Answer
Those are the only 3 colors you are required by the DOT regulations to be able to identify.
The flash cards you are referring to are the Ishihara cards (sometimes it's a book)
There are varying degrees and types of colorblindness. This type of test will determine which type you are and how limited your color vision is. You will be shown an number of circles with colored bubbles in them. Hidden within those bubbles will be a number in different colored bubbles. Some you may see, some you may not. This is the basis for the determination. Often, there are two numbers hidden in there, in two different colors.
As far as your DOT physical goes, however, you only have to be able to see RED, GREEN, AMBER. If you are able to do this and the physician still insists on testing further, you can challenge that.
Thanks for hanging around and reading all these months. Gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling, it does.
Good luck to you and your spouse, be sure to check back in and let us know how things go for you all.

I have a problem with light shades of colors. When I took my last DOT physical, I either didn't see any numbers on the charts or the wrong ones. They had a bunch of colored wooden blocks and asked me what color they were. Got them all right. Wouldn't put too much faith in the color charts.
