?? Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disorder (?Syndrome?)??
Real bad heartburn, like all the way up to your tonsils??
Sucks, huh?? As far as OTC stuff goes I like mylanta. A doctor can try some Rx stuff like prilosec (big$$$) among others.
Am I close???

Answer
Here is some information I found on Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It is from the Onhealth web site.

Answer
Me,
I can tell you this much...if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with this, it will require prescription medication.... such as Prilosec, although there are other medications also being used. The over-the-counter meds will only bring minimal relief.
Hope that helps you some.

Answer
I have been on Prilosec for 2 1/2 years now, and it has been a godsend. I cannot imagine life without it. I was so miserable before I was prescribed this drug, and now G.E.R.D. is but a distant memory!
Prilosec...Take me awaaaay...LOL..Mike

Answer
I have been on previcid for four months..it works but not always.I have lost 12 pounds cause i can only eat a little bit of food at a time.I do not get pains like heartburn, i get real bad pains in my back, kinda between my shoulder blades and then it radiates to my stomache...after a while it just turns to what feels like spasms right in the middle of my stomache..it lasts from 1 hour to 5 hours...also dairy products are all of a sudden my worst enenmy, I can no longer eat chicken, red meat, pork , forget butter or margarine, also onions, tomatoes, garlic, any red or cream suace, cofee, tea, (reg or decaf) soada, friut juice or any fruits at all, chocalate,....basicaly I cant eat anything at all...guess ill be wearing a size 5 in no time at all.... even drinking water can put me in agony if i drink to much at once..also if i am eating a meal i cant drink too...it has to be one or the other...last night i had applesauce for dinner...yipee....no pains....have also stocked up on multivitamins and extra calcium and vitamin c..what a strange illness to get at 30 years of age...I had a GI and it showed acid reflux..my doctor says the pains are gas and the spasms is the esophgus opening and closing allowing the food to flow back into the esophgus,so though the previcid controls the acid and reduces the pain, he says the reflux is forever and i will have to eat the way that i am forever or else have surgery that is not always 100 percent effective for more than a few years anyway...

Answer
Oh my God! Thank you so much for posting, Me.
My 13 year old daughter has the exact same symptoms that you have just described, but she has lost 30 pounds since December! She is being seen at Childrens Hospital, but just like you......they are saying that after an upper GI and an upper endoscopy all they are seeing is a mild case of esophogitis. They have put her on Prilosec, which sometimes helps and sometimes doesn't seem to do a thing. Some days she can eat a little and some days I can't get her to eat a thing because she says her stomach hurts and is nauseous.
Like Nurse Red just said, my mother (a former nurse) also suggested having the gallbladder looked at. We are back in to the doc on Wed. and I am going to request this, even though she is so young. I had my gallbladder removed in my 30's and had alot of these symptoms also. Please ask your doc to do an ultrasound of your gallbladder.
In re-reading your post, let me add something else. An upper GI is NOT a very definitive test. It doesn't necessarily pick up on everything. An endoscopy is much more definitive and is an outpatient procedure.....only takes about a half hour. You would be put under general anesthesia though.

I have brought up the Gall bladder idea to him ample times and he keeps telling me that it is not my gall bladder or anything other than GERDS.He has told me that almost all his patients over the years just cant understand that severe GERDS is extremly painful and that friends and relatives always encourage his patients to switch Dr's and look for other medical conditions that cause the extreme pain. I did have a second opinion and the result was the same, severe GERDS. I have had my best friend and my mother put me in a car and bring me to the hospital after hours of agony only to have the pains completly disapear while waiting for a doctor in the ER to examine me....My husband at one point kept telling me that both the Doctors i was seeing were wrong. He just cant believe that something like Gerds can be this painful..but it is and I am learning to cope with it.I have to eat teenie tiny amounts of food...or else a pay for it bigtime!
also FYI there was a period of time that lasted for a few weeks that when i was in agony i would force myself to throw up (before going to the specialist) I would be in such pain and the reflux so bad that I thought it would help..it did for maybe 10-15 min.but then it would come back. You all dont need to tell me just how bad that is to do, I already know.Just passing the info along in case anyone you know has similar symptoms and does the same thing it gives you a little insight as to why they might be doing it. Sometimes the reflux comes all the way up and you cant help it. But forcing it can lead to even more serious health problems... Any way I will be joining my hubby full time OTR..not driving but just to be with him...I know I cant eat at any of the places he eats at...so I will stock up on the few things i know I can tolerate.Applesauce, Plain bread, rolls, pretzels, water, popcorn(plain) bananas and dry cereal...there are other things I can eat, but i would need to be able to cook them and i wont have a way when i am in the truck with him at first..maybe after a while i'll invest in some goodies for cookin in the truck...but i do see myself losing a bunch of weight because of this ...

Answer
There is one other thing that you Dcotor MAY consider giving you a small emergency supply of since you will be traveling far from home. This is strictly up to your physician however, so go with his advice.
We used to administer what we called a GI cocktail in the Emergency Room for severe epigastric discomfort.
It is equal parts of Mylanta or Maalox, Gaviscon and Viscous Lidocaine (a numbing agant) it tastes NASTY and has another uncomfortable side effect. It not only numbs the painful area, but everything it contacts on the way down. Your tongue, lips, throat, etc. It can freak you out because you can't feel air going into your throat and you get the sensation of not being able to get enough breath. Just a suggestion, again I urge you to check with your physician.
And how can he say it's not you gall bladder if he hasn't checked it out??
