Question
Can you tell me, approximately, what my ideal blood pressure would be? I am a 51-yr old male and weigh 245 lbs, which is about 25 lbs more than the doctor says I should weigh. Typically, I get BP readings of around 140/82 while taking 10 mg Lotensin and am dieting and exercising in an effort to reduce these numbers. Thanks.
Answer
BP is through Cardiac Rehab and those numbers are good.
BTW are those numbers before or after exercise? Also what's your Resting and Target Heart Rate, these are just as important as your BP.

Answer
What is most important is keeping those numbers below a certain point. For driver's that point MUST be below 160/90. 140/82 is not bad, not bad at all. However, it is requiring medication to keep it at that point.
Keep up the exercise and eating right, it may turn out that with weight loss and increased activity you may not need the medication long term. BUT THAT IS FOR YOUR PHYSICIAN TO DECIDE.
Blood pressure readings done after exercise are going to be abnormally high. A blood pressure reading should not be measured until the heart returns to it's resting heart rate.
Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress.

Regulations aside, isn't the actual split between high and low the danger trigger?
I have heard it should NEVER be more that 60 points between S&D. (I am NOT going to try to spell those!)
I realize there are limits under the regulations, but the "normal" blood pressures for some folks seem absurd to others.
No?

Answer
There are other factors to be taken into consideration with blood pressure readings. And the difference between the systolic and diastolic pressures may be indicators of other problems. Trouble can also be indicated when there is less than 20 between the two numbers.
If the blood pressure readings are drastically different between the two arms, this is an indicator of other problems, as well.
Major differences in position (standing, sitting, and lying) that cause drastic changes in blood pressure can indicate a problem.
So, as you can see, the blood pressure has a lot to tell. Anytime it is out of the norm for an extended period of time, there needs to be follow-up and further evaluation.
