Question
I had a small fool-around website up and running with another domain that I own. I had it hosted with 1&1.
I had not visited it in a while (months, really), but I just signed up with a new host (our own wonderful sharlyndesign.com who ROCKS) so I went to access the site to copy the source so I could get it ready to upload, and POOF! All gone. 404. Not found. Kaput.
So, I have no clue what happened to it, but thank goodness I did not register my domain name through them as well!
Answer
I have 6 websites with 1and1.com and haven't had a problem accessing or finding them. Four of the sites have had recent activity (me playing around with them, not actual commerce). The other two I haven't done anything with but I just checked and they are still there.
Maybe it is just a glitch?
Answer
Strange. Maybe it's local.
Can you have a look at mine - is it showing up for you?

Answer
It isn't showing up for me either. I would occasionally get those messages when I didn't upload properly, but if the site has been there and now it's not, that is odd.
Can you get into the control panel on 1and1 and do any adminstrative work. At least you'll know that they didn't cancel you out.
Answer
I hate the 1&1 control panel. I can go cook a burger in the time it takes to load. I don't think I ever accessed it succesfully, and was using FTP to upload.
That's OK, I'm moving it all to sharlyndesign anyway, so I'm not going to worry about it.
Thanks for checking for me
Answer
That's ok, I'm sure you'll be happy with sharlyndesign. Good luck.
I know what you mean about the control panel, although it is better now than it was a first. Now your burger would be medium instead of well done.

Mystery solved. I just received this eMail from 1&1 support:
Dear sir/madam,
Contract: XXXXXX
We regret to inform you that, owing to a sudden and unforeseen serious
operational malfunction in one of our hosting servers on Sunday, the data
stored in your webspace has been irretrievably lost. We were able to
restore about 98% of the data from the backup of the affected server.
However,
unfortunately, due to a double fault your webspace fell within the 2% of
data which could not be recovered despite the arduous attempts of our
engineers.
We are informing you as quickly as possible to ensure that you can take
steps to re-upload all your website data.
1&1 apologizes unreservedly for this error.
To avoid any further technical problems we have replaced the entire
hardware in this server to ensure that future problems such as this will
be avoided.
If you have any questions about this e-mail, please don't hesitate to
contact us.
Sincerely
Customer Service

Answer
Well that's pretty impressive. They actually admitted they had a problem and apologized without being beat up on. I've been using them for one of my sites and haven't had any problems so far the service has been great but I do have to agree that the control panel is the slowest load I've ever seen.

Answer
I use them for hosting only and haven't had any problems with them once I figured out HOW to use it.
LOL (that took some time let me tell ya!)
I also have hosting with Sharon for my website... the 1and1 I use just for photo hosting.
btw Nan, your site shows up fine for me. I love the peacock feather background....
