Paypal Questions...

Question
I'd like to switch to a Merchant account. What are the pros/cons to doing so. I have a Premier account now with a PP Debit Card.
Also, I've noticed a lot of auctions recently saying that payment can be made from the ebay invoice only if payment is from a paypal balance. But if payment comes from CC they have to submit the payment through paypal differently. (I think I have this summarized correctly)
Thanks in advance,

Hello
We do considerable sales at Ebay and at our own website, using the Andale checkout and sales management system for bothe sources, together.
Ebay has been pressuring it's market users to use PayPal exclusively - both for payments from existing PayPal account balances and for new buyers using PayPal's checkout to enter credit card payments (a source of new accounts for PayPal) The result has been that almost all of our Ebay buyers now use the PayPal checkout.
In the meantime, Wells Fargo has been increasing it's effective costs to maintain and use the merchant account we have with them. With the reduction in volume through them due to the increase through PayPal, this merchant account has become comparitively uncompetitive and too expensive to continue.
We are therefore in process of programming our own shop cart for our website which will be using the PayPal checkout as its final payment processing function.
When this is operational and when we have the PayPal IPN set up to report sales to our own database for sales management, we will then replace the Andale shop cart with our own for Ebay sales as well.
Our intent is to close our credit cards merchant account and use the website PayPal shop cart for all credit card processing in the future. Our hope is also to replace the Andale sales management system with a simpler "home brewed" system tailored to our own needs.
Note that the PayPal checkout for website purchases does not require a PayPal account and "tones down" its solicitation for users to sign up for a new PayPal account at the end of its process. This is different from the in-Ebay PayPal checkout process.
This is just my own experience, but I hope this helps.
Any comments would be appreciated.

I've tried Paypal and an Web merchant account and for me Paypal was the best.
For a merch account it took 3 companys to process a purchase.
1. Provided shopping cart and gathered CC info.
2nd. Processed CC info.
3rd. Processed $ from co's to my bank account.
Each co took a cut and had monthly fees.
But here's the pisser, although I got each company from referals from the others, meaning some sort of partnerships to make all the programs work together, the gears never worked.
It was a major PITA to process a charge 'cuz one co or another "improving" it's process, but the other 2 co's wouldnt know.
Alot of hosting co's use MIVA for web merchants.
MIVA SUCKS. Stay away from them.
Paypal.
Easy, 1 stop processing.
For me, it works great.

I use Paypal on all my websites. They now allow my customers to make credit card purchase without signing up for Paypal and I must say my customers love it. About 75% of my sales are now done this way. A lot of impulse buyers don't want to sign-up with another online service.

Answer
Cobaltlady, would you elaborate? I have a transaction that is going to be too big for ProPay, and I want to run in through PayPal, but I know the buyer won't want to sign up with them. Do I just send them an invoice?

Answer
Wow wish I could answer that but I'm not sure the invoice will work. My customers just use my cart and when they get to paypal I think they have a option of not signing up. However if they are already signed up the option is not available. Maybe Katiyana will come along and help. She has done a few non-paypal sales.

Answer
The functionality for non-Paypal customers to pay via Paypal is only available for Website buttons.
Now, if you have website space, you SHOULD be able to create a button for the item, put it on the website, and direct the buyer to the button, and start the process that way.

Answer
Melbay one thing to remember this will be unconfirmed address so you will have no protection from charge-back. Of course I do it all the time. There aren't too many crooks after my stuff http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif. I have made transactions over $100 with no problems.

Answer
Actually I think both of my non-Paypal account holders payments were with Confirmed Addresses - I don't recall off the top of my head.
