Question
Does anyone know what this means when checking the ownership of a domain name?
a friend is wanting to register a domain name, so I can't disclose the name they are seeking, but when they check the Internic Database the domain name has been taken, but there is no registration information available. On the domain status section they get: Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Does this mean that the domain is on hold? If so, for how long.
Answer
i read that it could be anywhere from a couple months to a year.

Thanks Imosh! I don't know what this means but I suspect it is not good news for my friend regaring this particular domain name.
Answer
Another problem is that if it's a popular/common name in any way, shape or form, chances are someone who buys domains for a living and resells them will snap it up as soon as it 'drops'. Your friend wouldn't stand a chance.

quote:
REDEMPTIONPERIOD
A domain name is placed in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status when a registrar requests the deletion of a name that is not within the Add Grace Period. A name that is in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status will not be included in the zone file. A registrar can not modify or purge a name in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status. The only action a registrar can take on a name in REDEMPTIONPERIOD is to request that it be restored. Any other registrar requests to modify or otherwise update the domain will be rejected. Unless restored, the domain will be held in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status for a specified number of calendar days. The current length of this Redemption Period is thirty calendar days.

Blanche: As always, you totally, completely and utterly amaze me. How DO you come up with all this valuable information. I like to think that I am a reasonably seasoned web ferret, but I am a total failure in comparison to you. (Now, sometimes I get in a flap and ask first, then search later, but with this instance I was at loss as to where to find this info!!!) Many thanks for taking time to respond.

So what does this actually mean? The domain name I have been wanting expired in August. It now shows up as REDEMPTIONPERIOD. But even after reading the link, I still don't get exactly what this means, especially the part about the registrar restoring or deleting the domain.
The person who bought the domain name for a year let it expire and has not renewed. I assume the "registrar" is the company she paid to register the name. So if the registrar deletes it, does that mean it becomes available to anyone who wants it, or does that mean the name doesn't exist at all anymore? If the registrar "restores" it, does that mean someone new can register the name, or does that mean that the person who had it but let it expire is getting it back? I'm so confused about this. It's all Greek to me. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_confused.gif
Answer
songbird, you can purchase the domain name when the "Redemption Period" expires:
http://registernames.com/faq/7.html

quote:
My domain's status is "RedemptionPeriod" can I renew it?
We provide you with a grace period after your domain name expires. During this grace period you can renew your domain name and have it reactivated within 24-48 hours. After the grace period your domain is returned to the registry and put into the "Redemption Period" status. During this 30 day period you may apply to have your domain reinstated from the registry for a $150 fee plus the renewal fee. At the end of the "Redemption Period" your domain will be deleted from the registry completely and made available to others to register. Domain name expiration cycle explained.

And as an added plus, the site you linked to charges less for domain names than the company I have my current one with. Lower prices and explanations in plain English. Can't beat that combination, LOL! http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
