Question
I need to renew my domain name and want to do it myself. My isp has done it in the past and for this renewal, they want $ 35 to do it.
I am sure I can do it myself for a lot less http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
Suggestions where to go ?
The site is currently hosted at my isp, but I may also be changing that. Not sure yet. It's going to depend on price, etc.
Thanks,
Patti
Answer
Patti,
There's lots of places you can renew with.. Some as low as like $5 - but a caveat - Years of experience with these 'low end' domain registrars has lead me right back to NetworkSolutions. (you get what you pay for)
There is only 2 that I would recommend. Either Network Solutions or tucows. Network solutions is the $35 price tag(unless you buy whoesale, about $18), Tucows will run $15.
My first question would be who is your current domain registrar? You may also have to change registrars in order to get the better prices.

Answer
Second vote for Network Solutions and Tucows.
Personal opinion: GoDaddy was a PITA.
Answer
If you plan to change hosting, they will do the renewal for you. Usually $20 or less. They usuually go thru Tucows.
Fatcow is about $99/year for 500 megs plus like $20 for the domain registration. Sometimes, they throw in first year domain name for free.
If you do decide to use Fatcow, please check and see who is on there already so someone can get a referral.

I've used http://www.cheap-domainregistration.com/ for 3 years and have never had a problem. I use them as a registar only. I feel it is better to keep registar and host separate. I think there are fewer problems that way if you want to change hosts.
What's also nice about this registar is that I can change DNS addresses myself. So I'm not waiting for some tech to "get around" to repointing it for me, should I want to change hosts.
Answer
I have a local dial up isp. I asked them about hosting my website and they do for me. I asked how much for the website name registration and they did that for me also. I have been using the same isp for just over 5 yrs now.
Basically it's a good service for what is available in this area. I live in the country, on a side road so I cannot get cable as it does not come up our road far enough.
Every once in awhile , like maybe several times a month, I will see some of my pictures are not showing up. I also use a different photo hosting site for most of my auction pictures.
website
It's a real simple site that I did by mysef. I need to put more effort into it, and make it work for me.
Thanks for all the replies http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
Jim, what do you mean by wholesale ? Does that mean like if you have more than one domain name and you would renew them all at once ?
Answer
Patti,
Right now your domain is registered through 'bulkregister.com' - they only deal with resellers, so if you want to be able to renew cheaper, you will have to change your registrar. This can be done very easily by whoever you decide to use to renew your domain.
If your images (website) goes down, "several times a month" I would also consider changing hosts for your website. It should not go down that often. (if at all).
Wholesale Network Solutions registrations are rare. You have to be a premier partner with Network Solutions to have the ability to sell them wholesale, and most businesses that can, just don't.
If you decide you want to go this route, you might want to check with Sharon ( www.sharlyndesign.com ) - I think she sells wholesale to everyone, but if not, tell her I sent you from here.

Answer
Wholesale means I can give you a better deal than Network Solutions retail price($35).
I'll give here members the wholesale price. It's $19/year for Network Solutions registrations & renewals.
Answer
Thanks again for the replies.
I have made my decision to stay with my isp and their hosting plan. They will be moving my site to a different server so I will have faster loading of my pictures, etc.
The tech guy explained that actually I have a good plan with them as I have been with them the 5 yrs now and basically grandfathered in.
I can get them on the phone and iron out problems real quick, so that is a big plus.
I appreciate the fresh new ideas and did check out quite a few things. So it was a good updating and learning experience for me.
I am not a real technical type person. But I can write simple html, follow most directions, and take some good pictures.
So I am all set for the time being.
Again thanks !
Patti
