i think its time to get rid of it, and find one that is totally site specific.
(yes ours is set to just check imosh, but ads are still present)
there's quite a few out there, anyone have know of one i should look at?

Are you talking about getting rid of the Google search tool entirely, or just at your site?
I use the former Atomz search feature, now called Web Side Story.

Imosh, have a go at www.freefind.com
It works pretty well for me, and (just like its name) it's free. They index your site once a week (that's the default, I think you can set it to index the site at whatever intervals you want to specify) and I've seen a LOT of people at my website use it, based on tracking statistics.
