Problem setting up x-cart

I am so very new to this website business and code but I'm a fast learner. I am having a problem in setting up x-cart to do what I thought would be as easy as 1-2-3. I have it to use my PayPal merchant account for payment and all works well up until a certain point. On test runs, I purchase an item, it goes through the process and onto PayPal...I click Pay, and then when directed back to my site I receive an error 'Order processing error! Payment processor declined your order. Please review your data and try again.
I checked PayPal and the payment was made. There is no data in x-cart showing order completed/payment made. What am I doing wrong or am I expecting too much

I have no idea what's wrong, but you definitely are not expecting too much. My x-cart shopping carts go to Paypal and come back just fine.
Just bumping this to keep it up where some other folks who KNOW something might be able to help...

Could you post the version of x-cart that you're using?
You want to make sure that that you have the correct path to your ps_paypal.php under your paypal profile in IPN Preferences.
You are using "standard" Paypal and not Paypal Pro right?

Thank you for your response. Its x-cart gold and standard Paypal. Just lookin' into the ps_paypal.php now to make sure.

Its x-cart gold The version # would be a big help.

My sister just pointed out to me that we had a similar thing happen Aug 11:
I am a new customer who completed the entire registration process, purchased 3 items (sets of choral works) and continued successfully through PayPal to pay a total of $49.00 to your company. ($4.00 of the $49.00 was the shipping charge).

When I returned to your site, I received a message that the order had been cancelled because the payor denied payment. This is completely contrary to my PayPal receipt.

Please contact me by email or by phone immediately so we can resolve this issue. I would like to continue to be a customer of your site, but I must be certain that my transactions are processed correctly.

Thanks in advance for your help. This was an echeck payment. Regular credit card or cash payments seem to be fine.
And the real odd thing is that the payment DID go through (I got the notice that it had) but the customer couldn't tell...except by her own paypal receipt.
