Answer
Hi Gemstonze, I'm beginning serious study of this myself. To start, I recommend this free course at HP Learning Center: Search engines 101: using search engines to market your business. It's about how to optimize your site, and researching keywods. I haven't completed the assignments yet, must keep myself at it.
I'm also reading Buzz Marketing with Blogs for Dummies and am waiting for two other books to arrive in the mail.
Eric Guigere has a book and blog called MakeEasyMoneyWithGoogle. That's about AdSense. If you're not interested in that, keep clicking links. Mr. Guigere has a lot of related sites. He offers some free courses by email and PDF, and has good tips online. Most of his stuff is about increasing your online presence and establishing yourself as an expert by publishing. If you write well, this could be excellent. He provides lots of links to further sources.
Don't forget to check Search Engine Watch, and searching SEO and "online marketing" could turn up a lot of great info. Ditto for searching the same in Amazon Books.
I'll post about my 2 new books after they arrive, if you're interested. I forget what I ordered, but they sounded great. I spent a lot of time at Amazon reading reviews and checking links.
(Off topic: I see that my signature's out of date. I'll go revise it next.)

Run several ads (classifieds and/or auctions) at here's Community Marketplace (OCM) here at here. This will really help your Search Engine placement, especially since you will put your website link into the form! And if you make sure to have the relevant words in your description that will also help with the SEs when someone is looking for the kinds of stuff you sell.
Depending on what you sell you might even get some business from folks here at here, but that would just be gravy, not really the main goal of your advertising here.
You can also put links to sites you own into your signature line here AND automatic links at the top of your threads to any auctions or classifieds you are running at OCM. (look up to the right top of this post for mine) That way when you participate here at here you get extra exposure. And take a look through some of the older threads for other marketing ideas....
For the money ($.02 per ad, 60 days of classified or for 9 days auction) there is NOTHING that will work better, in my opinion. It's easy and cheap.
I'm currently been running a single classified ad for an old barn, which has turned up serious responses and offers from as far away as Denmark, Wyoming, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin and even from here in Illinois.
And now I need to take my own advice and start an ad for my newest website (link below)
Welcome to here!

Thanks, Goodworks1 and Kathleen. I have "run an OCM ad" on my to-do list, but didn't think to mention it. D'oh.
Lots of well-organized info in that Beginner's Guide thread, Kathleen. I will study it.
I'm designing a site and blog and thinking about what products and services I can offer and thinking about keywords and learning about pay-per-click (PPC) marketing all at once. Quite the hairball I've immersed myself in. I think of this as the fun part.

I've been learning about writing articles and investigating Squidoo. Finally signed up and started my first lens last night.
I plan to concentrate on my blog, Squidoo and Google Base for now. Oh yeah, and my website.
Check out Squidoo if you haven't before. Seems quite reputable and I like their business model. Fun reading there, too. Can integrate quite nicely with a blog.
If you'd like the some of the links I've accumulated about online publishing/copywriting/article repositories and so on, just say so and I'll organize them.
I've signed up for beaucoup free newsletters on different topics, all from marketers. Some of them are quite educational.
