Question
I created this website for a customer / friend of mine.
www.finehandwear.com
I have put in the meta tags correctly (I think) but I don't know how to advise him on how to submit his site to search engines.
I know that there are companies out there that do this type of thing for a fee but I don't know if it is worth it to pay someone or not.
has anyone ever heard of listingcorp.com?
any other SEO companies that are worth the fee?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Answer
Hi Tanya,
You really don't have to worry about submitting to the search engines, per se. What a webmaster must do these days is to acquire links within other web sites that have been established and are already indexed. The link will be picked up by the SE's spider, and soon it will be crawled... and then, in time, it will (hopefully!) be indexed.
I would submit the site to a few free directories, then perhaps inquire to other related sites about link exchanges. That's really all that needs to be done.
Google does have a submission form... but I don't have the link handy. More information can be found here for Google: http://www.google.com/support/bin/an...=745&topic=356
Yahoo also offers a submission procedure. You can find the link here, amongst many other webmaster resources: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearc...master-01.html
MSN does not offer a submission procedure that I'm aware of. Nor does ask dot com. The good thing I've found about MSN, is that they are rather quick to pick up new sites, even with very few links.
I'm not sure about listingcorp dot com... I can only say that many SEO firms are overly aggressive, and more importantly, make promises they cannot possibly keep. Don't get me wrong... I'm certain there are some very good firms out there to optimize and promote a web site, but I can't give any first hand experience on the reliability or performance of such firms.
The most important thing, again... is to establish links from other sites that are already indexed... that's the first step. Then apply patience liberally, keep improving the web site's content, and all will be well!
Cheers

I agree with Fiberguys reply. 99% of the SEO companies make false promises. With one link the major search engines will index the site. Then it becomes how well you set up the site and the strength and type of links you get.

Couple of quick tips. It appears your description meta tags are all the same. You need to make individual meta tags that apply to each page. One more. Your url for men and womens gloves would be better if you added mensgloves to the string. You currently have http://www.finehandwear.com/mens.html this would be better http://www.finehandwear.com/mensgloves.html I was so glad to see you used static pages.

Thank you Fiberguy and Mike
Fiberguy,
So he has to find other sites that will carry a link to his web site?
Like mine for instance (I think I am established lol) if I put his link on my page it will help his SEO? Same for pages like my ME page on eBay - etc.
I just woke up and all my braincells aren't firing properly just yet so forgive me if I sound like a ditz.
I will submit him to google and yahoo via the links - THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
______________
Mike,
I will work on the descriptions for the secondary pages and change the URLS for them as well
Thanks for those tips.
I have always heard that static pages do better in the search engines than the dynamic pages but oh what a pain in the keester the paypal shoppping cart is.
I nearly lost all my hair getting it to work with the inventory changes and now I am trying to figure out the shipping. ughhhh
you would think that with as big as PP is they would have better cart options available as standard.
Anywhoooooo THANKS a bunch.
Answer
Buy classified ads here at here and use the link(s) - the quickest way I know of to get googled and get people to look... And at $.15/mo you can't beat the price. Put a 'throwaway/temporary' email address on the site somewhere (as a test) and you'll find out how fast it's found.
Or do one of the combo ads with auctionbytes - see the details at OCM. That one lasts a year and gets links both here and at auctionbytes, plus promotions in the AB newsletter and on their web pages. You can change the text and photos any time over the year (and multiple times if you like)
Posting the link above will no doubt help also

So he has to find other sites that will carry a link to his web site?
For the search engines to find a web site, they have to follow something to get there to begin with. So, to get indexed, one link on a regularly crawled web site is all you need. Just any link won't necessarily help ranking, but it the site will eventually be found.
I found the Google submission page, which may help a bit: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
Good Luck!

You've already got that by posting the link(s) here.

If you do a link for him from your website do something like this. The Finest mens gloves can be found at www.finehandwear.com . Link the men's gloves to his mens page that will give added strength to the keywords mens gloves. Link the www to his homepage.

Answer
Associate your deep pages with keyword anchor text, especially when you are targetting that phrase/keyword...
So for example <a href="www.finehandwear.com/mensgolves.htm">Mens Gloves</a> from Fine Hand Wear (or your url if you want)
