FTP files question

Question
Hi
I'm not sure if I am explaining this right so hopefully you can make sense of my question.
You know how the ftp program has the left side (files on my computer) and the right side (files uploaded to my site)
If I take the whole folder from the right side or one of the HTML pages and move it back to the left side, will that overwrite the files on the left side?
The HTML files uploaded are correct. I was going to add a page and noticed the files on my computer aren't the right ones. Somewhere along the line I messed up the files I have on my computer.

If I take the whole folder from the right side or one of the HTML pages and move it back to the left side, will that overwrite the files on the left side? I have moved files back to my computer from my FTP webspace and it did overwrite. Just to make sure try one and see what happens. Actually it copies it back to the computer and leaves it on the FTP webspace, it doesn't actually move it. Has saved me a couple of times, especially once when my computer crashed and I lost everything.

Answer
yes it will overwrite the files that are named the same as the file being transferred. I you have the settings set to warn you of this it will warn you that you are about to overwrite a file that already exsists with the same name.
I don't depend on this though because I find that sometimes it doesn't warn me.
If you want to keep the exsisting files you can go in and rename them with _old after the name.
example:
doobeedog.html
doobeedog_old.html
once you have named the files on your hard drive with the _old you can safely transfer the files without overwriting.
