Question
a) USE "ALT" tags on every photo and/or gif.
b) USE a variety of KEYWORDS in the "ALT".
ie- your website is dedicated to selling Wigets. One photo ALT could be "big blue wiget wigets" with both the plural and singular form, in addition to any other descriptive search term used not only to describe your widget, but also terms used on your individual page to describe the widget. The more combination of keywords used in the ALT tags, the better!
Alt tags are also a (currently) good place to use common misspellings of "wiget" "widget" "wigit" "widgit" etc.
:)
Answer

That's cool, I didnt know about that. I've been wondering how to get my pic's to show up in searches. Looks like "alt" is the way to go.
Now just comes the hard part.
going thru all that HTML and "alting".
Answer
Image alt tags play an important role for visitors using screen readers etc. They are a major accessiblity feature.
They should be used ONLY to accurately and briefly describe the img they are attached to.
They SHOULD NEVER be used to stuff extranious keywords or other spam, like mis-spellings in.
