Question
I went to this quilt fabric site
http://www.fatquartershop.com/
and everytime I try to look at an additional page (right click, open in a NEW TAB) I get a box that looks like a Windows warning that basically says all their pictures, etc are copyrighted and you can't use them without permission from the site owners. This box locks up your keyboard and mouse until you click OKAY -- and then the same box comes up again and needs to be clicked before you can actually go look at the new tab you've opened....
I was seriously interested in some of their items until this happened. Why would I want to click a couple of extra times everytime I want to view another page? Not to mention, why would I want to be accused of stealing their photos when I was actually trying to buy their items????
I am still on their mailing list (for now). I'll write and complain.
Have you ever seen anything like this???
Why would someone use it?

Answer
I wrote to the site owner and got a very nice message back right away explaining that her photos have been stolen numerous times and used at other people's websites. And that this was the only way to protect her intellectual property as the lawsuits were using hundreds of dollars (this info is paraphrased)
I really do sympathize, but the problem is that the photos can still be easily copied if that's what the visitor wants to do. (I sent a copy of two of them back to her in my response) In the meantime I'm afraid she's infuriated her true customers.

Got a second friendly message from her - she's considering removing the 'message' box...
I invited her here. Hope she'll post!

Hello!!
Elaine referred me here. Can anyone possibly help me?
I have had numerous images stolen off my site over the past two years. I used to not have a name imprint on my images but I do now. I put coding on my site so people cannot right click on images and save to their computer (If you click fast it does allow you to save though so the coding doesn't really work). I put that on there since (1) most of the people stealing my images were really smart enough to get around my coding and (2) to let them know that the images were my intellectual property and (3) to save myself the headache of sending legal letters. I had one lady set up show in a similar name and EVERY picture of fabric she was selling was mine. UGH
So does anyone know of coding that will not allow people to take images but that will allow you to open a new window by right clicking?
I will take the coding off my site this weekend since it is annoying. If anyone has a different solution I would really really appreciate it

Is this person still doing this? I can't imagine she'd do well just copying your site. Surely you have lots of features and good stuff to offer that she can't really do. Or is it not that simple...

Well she surely doesn't huge my images any more but I think she is still in business. I only knew she stole them becuase a customer told me. But I think my lawyer scared her. THe others stopped as well but they only took one to two pictures. She took about 15

Hi and welcome!
As Elaine pointed out to you . . . what you are doing really doesn't work that well. I was able to get one of your images in about two seconds . . . and I didn't even have to click fast. I just worked around your no copy code.
And I don't know squat about this kind of stuff!
I think that from a practical point of view, the best you can do is watermark your images, which you have started doing. And check your web host stats to make sure that somebody else isn't hotlinking to them.

to here, Kimberly!
Again, this is NOT fool-proof for a determined person, but you may want to investigate this software: http://www.isdntek.com/noclick.htm
Other than watermarking your photos, I'm afraid there's no 'fool proof' way of keeping determined people from getting them. Sorry.

When someone doesn't just steal your image, they take your url and link to your pic on your web host instead of using their own.
