Question
I have a site up that gets a google page rank of 3/10. I've been reading about google page rank until I am blue in the face, and I still don't have a handle on it. Is 3/10 good? I assume it's the same as a test score - 3/10 would be a dismal failure!
But then, I checked Blujay's page rank and it was 0/10. eBay is 9/10.
So how am I doing? What is considered to be a normal or good (for a small business site that is) rank? How often is the ranking thing updated? How do I get 'better' ranking? I checked a friend's site and they have a 5/10 rank. I'm jealous!
Gotta get more links I guess.
Answer
Truthfully, it means little.
The REALLY IMPORTANT object is to move up in the search engine placement ranks. (ie you could have a PR5 page, but be listed #972 in the results - therefore, few, if any, will ever FIND your site, therefore, little if no traffic, few sales, etc.)
Now, indirectly, page rank DOES have some importance, when searching for link partners. Some webmasters will not link to anyone BELOW a certain rank, so having decent page rank (and I would certainly consider a 3 decent) CAN help you as far as obtaining link partners.
I'd suggest that you not worry too much about PR, and concentrate on adding 'content' to your site, getting relevant and quality backlinks, etc.
(PS-all 3 of my sites are 4/10, and all have been #1 at Google for multiple keyword phrases for years.)
Answer
Thanks Kathleen. I've only had the site up since July, so although I have spent a lot of time studying SEO - it's quite a different matter when it comes to actually producing the results. I'll soldier on.
But I was curious as to how I got a page rank of three. I'm still not doing well on the google searches for the site unless you key in certain limited search terms that apply to the site, and would attract regional visitors I'm sure. I still need to get a better grip on the keywords. It all takes time, so I soldier on!
Answer
Google's pagerank algorithm is shrouded in secrecy!
You got pagerank because someone linked to you.
You got pagerank because your pages are optimised.
You got pagerank because you've got good structure.
You got pagerank because you've got searchable text.
You got pagerank because you've got good content.
And finally, you have pagerank because Google SAYS you have pagerank!
Let us not look the gifted horse in the mouth.
Answer
I think that only google has a 10/10 page rank.
I just keep adding content and links slowly and my pr goes up slowly.
and my sales have gone up as well.
just keep going forward.
