Admin Program

Question
Ok, I admit I know nothing about website design. But, while ours is getting designed the question came up. Do you want an Admin page? Cost $300.00 ... So the question is, is it needed or just and added expense?
Thanks in advance. I've been reading these forum questions too. And Thanks to those sharing their knowledge. Much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Empires, that question could mean anything. What do they mean by an 'admin page' - it could be extremely needed or simply a password protected page with a few links on it.. lol

Here on here I have several 'admin' pages that allow for things such as adding a new forum, changing someones password, etc., without them, I would need to directly edit the database manually which would mean re-writing command line code every time I needed to do something.

So I guess the first thing you would need to do is find out what functionality the admin page would give you and what backend administration functions it would handle.

Answer
Thanks, Jim.
You beat me to the post.

Answer
The admin page would be for password protection and allow us to upgreade our website without bunking it up. What more information can I give? Just let me know. Like I said, I'm not proficent in this at all.

Answer
Is this just a basic website with HTML pages and such or is it an interactive application (like here) where your users will interact with the site in other ways than just viewing it?

Answer
Just a plain basic one. The reasoning I'm hearing is that it's easier for multiple people to work on it and not bunk it up along the way. Does it make any sense?

Answer
An argument could be made for that reason, but not a very good one.

It still doesn't prevent someone from mucking it up. If multiple people are working on a site there are lots of programs (like Dream Weaver) that could be used to 'check-in' and 'check-out' documents so that two people don't over-write each others changes.

If it's a basic site, I wouldn't spend the extra money. Plus, most website hosts have 'admin' pages that will allow you maintain and edit your site if you wanted to use that method. Most 3rd party applications like shipping carts, etc., come with there own admin pages also, so you don't really need one for the main website.

Shopping carts would be nice too. And as always, and never enough, Thank You.

Shopping carts would be nice too. And as always, and never enough, Thank You. In Dream Weaver you would find it in your 'remote site' setup.. on mine it's

Site > Define Sites > Edit > Remote Info

then

Enable Check In/Out

Also, here's a little tip..

If you have/use FTP - always login to the site with it and download the entire site onto your harddrive to a backup folder before you use Dream Weaver to update the site.

If you ONLY use Dream Weaver, you can create two sites. Your primary website, and define another site as your 'backup' - grab the files from the website, then switch sites in Dream Weaver to your primary and do the updates. This way, even if you screw something up real bad, you always have a previous copy to fall back on.

I think I'm going to pass on the Admin program and just learn Dreamweaver... looks like a better deal. Now onto learning html and such.. Thank You very much.
