webmaster/website experts... keywords/meta tags

Question
is it some sorta violation to use someones dot com/company name within a site?
for example, if site: lowes.com
had these keywords: homedepot, home depot
homedepot.com, lumber world, the wood shop...
would this be a copyright violation or something?

Answer
Hmmm... I don'tknow if it's a copyright violation as much as a trademark issue.
But I believe I've read about litigation in this area.
I think the crux of the matter revolves around whether a site is trying to use the tags to get business that would otherwise go to the trademark owners business.
Sites that include others trademarks in the tags because they have a page about the item described by the trademark might be another thing.
But, of course I'm no lawyer, so these random thoughts are probably worthless, and you should not consider them to be legal advice.

Answer
Tread VERY carefully, Imosh!
Take Kenlee's post to heart - and head. Google search for this issue - there's some big bucks backing infringing use of trademark names in even AdWord campaigns.

That's a great article. Well written and easy to understand.

Answer
ok, meta tags are one thing, but what about text not meta tags?
ex:
don't buy from homedepot.com, home depot, the wood depot, sears, sears.com, etc because we're better.

Someone might question my motives but I would be inclined to say something like:
We are very proud of our commitment to customer satisfaction and invite your comparison of our quality, value and customer service with nationally known competitors such as..........

Answer
ray, that is very smooth, but for my application i would be forced to say something like:
We are very proud of our commitment to customer satisfaction and invite your comparison of our quality, value and customer service with our competitors ..xlj,alfj, lajf,..... who most likely do not have stock on hand, and have terrible customer service.
