Question
Not sure what it's called.
I have some products on my website and I'd like to fix it where you click on the picture and instead of going to a whole new page...you get a smaller "pop-up" box with an enlarged view.
I've seen it on other sites, so I know it's possible - but I can't figure out how to do it. Also...is this even a recommended way of doing it or is there a "downside" I'm not aware of?
All help GREATLY appreciated.
Answer
It's generally called a javascript popup window. The major downside is that many people have popup blockers. They would have to turn the blocker off to see the new window.
There are lots of ways to make a popup window. A good place to look for a script is www.dynamicdrive.com. Dynamic Drive also has this code generator for popup windows:
http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex8/popwin.htm
To use it, first make the page with the enlarged pic. Store that page on your web server. Then go to this form and fill in the blanks, click the "Generate Code" button, and copy the resulting code into the web page that contains the smaller pic, around whatever you want to make clickable.
If you have any problems, come back and ask. When you get it finished, wanna share?
Answer
Thanks Jayne!
I had wondered if pop-up blockers would affect it or not. I know some sites I've been to, my blocker does stop it - but on others it doesn't. I wasn't sure what the difference was.
I'm going to go experiment now and I'll definitely be back to share.
Answer
I don't know why some windows are stopped by popup blockers and others are not. Or why one popup blocker stops a certain window but another popup blocker won't.
I would think that the popup blocker is looking for a certain "trigger" that classifies the new window as a popup. I suppose that, like anti-virus programs, each popup blocker program has it's own list of triggers. Maybe Blanche or someone knows exactly.
Good luck with the window.
Answer
Yeah! It worked!!
I'm using Firefox and so far it's not stopping the pop-up boxes when I view it.
Warning...this is a work in progress (just started on it yesterday):

The pics look great! The popup window is very nice--just the right size.
One thing that I thought, if you don't mind a suggestion. Rather than calling the pages "Dog Labels - Page 1", "Dog Labels - Page 2", etc., why not call them "Dogs (A-L)", "Dogs (M-S)", etc.?
I kept trying to click the pics themselves instead of the title underneath. Might be a good idea to make both things links, just for airheads like me.
I like the colors and the feel of that page. Kinda country, but not overdone. Crisp, but cosy.

Don't feel bad...I keep doing the same thing!
I tried getting the pictures to 'operate' the popup, but I confess I was afraid to change the code too much. I'm going to definitely keep trying though.
I LOVE suggestions and I think you're right about naming the pages. I think alphabetical will work better.
I really appreciate all the help and compliments!

I had to come check it out - on IE right now with no pop-up blocker, where they came up fine but will check on AOL later to see how the pops ups get "controlled" ... I think they work perfectly for what you are trying to do!
My thoughts were the same as jaynes, I'd want to search by breed name and wouldn't know which page to use for J (jack russell WINKWINK) and natch I was trying to click the pics for the link as well - just outta habit. *Yeah even AFTER I'd read the part that said "click names to see larger image"
Nice job, I think the colors and feel of the page is really nicely done.
The SPACING on the individual tables is PERFECT and I really like the smaller "spacer" table in between the rows, really helps the eye move down to the next are of choices. No muss no fuss, easy to shop!

Thanks gem!
These pop-up boxes seem so much "neater" than clicking and going to a huge white page with just the picture in the upper left corner.
Now I only have 6 more pages and 150+ more dogs (one of which is a Jack Russell ) to go...
Answer
LOL I was going to mention that the photos need to be clickable but see that has been covered already.
I think you should be able to do the photos like the links.. just encase the img tag instead of the text and remember to give the photos a border=0 so that you wont get the "blue link line" around them.
I think it looks great!! I love the layout, the buttons, and the overall FEEL!
The only thing that I would change is the text in the header. It looks "pixelated" to me even though I am sure it is supposed be that way for a "primitive" feel.
