Question
I'm planning to set up a second site to sell individual craft patterns in jpeg format. I'm wondering how hard/easy it is set it up for instant delivery of their file after payment. Is there a business that does this sort of thing? Right now I don't even know the right words to use to do an effective Google search.
Answer
Here is a website I found that looks like it might do what you want:
http://www.iventa.com/Paid-Download-...nt-System.aspx
I Googled "program to automate downloads once customer has paid"
and they were the first site listed ... (I was pretty stumped for the proper search terms, myself! but theirs says "Paid Download Management System" so maybe that would work too) I didn't read much about them, so I can't recommend them, just passing on the link.
Have NO IDEA how you would do it on your own, but I'm figuring thats the route to take - once the customer has paid they are either emailed a link to the download or taken directly to the download page. (Like, I know I've bought graphics or fonts online and they were only "unlocked" once I paid. But how they do that I couldn't tell ya, sorry!)
Good luck, sounds like you have a great idea in the works

ETA: they had a list of keywords at the bottom of the page you might also try:
Paid Downloads Management, Paid Downloads Manager, Paid Downloads System, Paid Download Management, Paid Download System, Paid Download Manager, Paid Download Store, Sell Downloads, Sell Download, Sell Files Online, Sell Secure Files Online.

This looks like it is definately on the right track!!!!! I'm off to reading the details now, but this is by far the closet I've seen in the last 24hrs of searching! Thank You!!!

Another option would be to have the patterns on 'password protected' pages. When buyers pay, they're given the password to the specific pattern page, which they can then download and/or print. Different password on each pattern page would keep a buyer from obtaining a password and enabling them from downloading ALL the patterns.
Cheaper than a software!

I am wondering about the ability to justify the costs at first, and may need to do this in stages -- especially since I won't have very many products at first, so password protected pages would be a far cheaper solution. I wish that there would be some way that I could automate an email to that person so that they could get the password sent to them automatically upon payment. I thought that maybe Paypal was able to do this, but if so, then I haven't found it yet. Thanks!

Depending what (if any) shopping cart you use, you could set it up in such a way that it 'auto-responds' with the password. But you'd need to set the cart up seperately so that your 'regular' buyers (those that aren't purchasing the downloadable patterns) wouldn't receive the auto-reply.
