Website Questions

Question
What do you call one of those webpages that re-directs you to another site? A redirect page? Are they less expensive than if you get the web hosting package?

I already own one website domain but have never really gotten it off the ground. It is designed and probably ready to launch if I wanted but life happenings have stopped me from moving ahead. For the sake of discussion, I will say that I sell ORANGES (and the website name reflects that) on this site.

My sister and I are working on a joint venture that sells APPLES. I am trying to decide whether to just get the whole website package and start from scratch or get a re-direct that sends them to my ORANGES website.

I hope I got the point across so that it can be understood. Pros/Cons?

Answer
A 301 is a permanent redirect of a web URL or page.
A 401 (or I've seen it called a 404) is the "Page Can Not Be Found" page, aka 'error page'.
My webhost allows custom 401's, but I'm not sure about 301's.
If you have access to your .htaccess files, you can set up your own 'redirects'.
Here's a site which explains it much better than I.

Answer
Kathleen, Would you be put off if you went to www.apples.com and it redirected you to www.oranges.com?

Answer
Not a whole lot, but it does bother me, as I'm not sure WHY I'm being 'moved' elsewhere.
I know sometimes folks change the name of their website, and therefore, visitors to the old site are 'redirected' to the new (name) site.
But redirects are also the 'playground' of hijackers who find security holes in websites and maliciously redirect from a 'real' site to their' spammy' site.
Which site (apples or oranges) is highest in the SERPS (search engine placements), has the higher page rank and has the most quality backlinks? Choose that one, and make the other a subdomain of the best? That way, both sites increase in all aspects of search engine placement, and the subdomain can be optimized for itself, thus benefitting both.

Answer
If you already own a hosting package, chances are you can point BOTH domains to the same space. Just set up different folders or index pages. My host lets me use up to 8 domain names. Most hosting companies do the same. Look at the FAQs and see.
There's usually a nominal charge.....my company charges $1/month for each domain name.
