Question
entrepreneur magazine has a special ebay issue , I was perusing it and they stated that most shippers will deny a claim if the box used wasn't new
anyone ever heard of this ?
we usually used recycled box's but We havent had any damage claims so I dont know
Answer
I've heard of it. My postmaster said the same thing.
She said for instance they might deny a box that is commercial branded, such as Kleenex printed all over the outside, when it contains something else.
Picky picky.
Answer
I've only ever had 2 claims--one (a huge one!) with UPS and one with USPS. Used boxes weren't an issue, but that's been close to 10 years ago. I suspect eBay has radically changed the number of shipping claims since then.
Answer
UPS initially denied a damage claim I filed last January because I'd used a recycled box. That was the first I'd heard that new boxes were required. I appealed and they eventually paid the claim though.
Answer
I have a vague memory of this topic being discussed before on this board (or another perhaps).
Answer
I was thinking of this thread this morning when I was wrapping a package for UPS pick-up.
I occasionally work for companies who ship me audiovisual equipment and I ship it back to them in the same box it was shipped to me. This morning I was putting a box together for return shipment that contained a laptop computer and data projector. Each piece of equipment is in it's own hardside case inside the box but it is now a "used" box. Wonder how that would be handled?
P.S. UPS made me pay a $10.50 pick up fee for them to come to my house to get it. They said there was no way to charge the company for the pick-up and I would have to personally pay the fee. They said there would be no charge if I gave it to a driver or dropped it off at a UPS store. Since the nearest UPS store is 20 miles away and the chances of me seeing a UPS driver out here in the boondocks is pretty slim, I guess $10.50 is a small price to pay. Incidentally, FedEx picked a package up yesterday with no problem. I also get same day service for FedEx pick up; UPS could not be here until tomorrow.
Answer
I recall a discussion about a tampon (or similar ) box being used that offended someone and wound up with a neg being left
Ive seen coments that it dosnt look proffessional
. I dont ever recall the use of "recyled" boxs in general coming up as to denied damge claims .
I get new items shipped in new flimsy boxs that I wouldnt ship in
Answer
I've received items in reused Priority Boxes that were pretty busted up and "mushy". If the contents had been damaged, I'm sure the USPS would have balked at paying out insurance.
Some boxes just don't withstand more than one shipment. While most of us wouldn't use a box unsuited for the item, many sellers cut corners wherever they can. The new free Priority Boxes are cheap in the extreme.
I always tried to keep my outgoing packages looking as "professional" as possible. Neat wrapping, smooth tape with no cat hair, shipping labels printed via laser printer etc. Back when I was selling a lot, I received many mentions of good shipping.
Answer
A good many of the larger boxes I use are recycled and most of them are more heavy duty than the Priority boxes! I'd have to battle that one if a claim was denied.
Then again, I use DSI insurance and they have more sense than that.

Answer
I sometimes recycle boxes, but only if they're in good condition and don't have potentially embarrassing printing on them (i.e. no tampon boxes ).
Those 12x12 Priority boxes don't seem to hold up as well as the smaller sizes.
The flat rate ones without the adhesive flaps seem to be very sturdy.
