Global Priority question

Question
I've never shipped Global Priority (the didn't have that option when I last did Ebay). I have always shipped Air Mail. Now I have a buyer from Switzerland and it woud be several dollars cheaper to ship in the Global Priority envelope. It's bulky, but it fits and weighs under a pound. Can bulky items be shipped that way? And what is Global Priority variable weight? Can I use my own box and ship it that way? The item would be safer in the box I have rather than a priority envelope, and would still be cheaper than air mail. I will leave it up to the buyer to decide, but I wanted to know which method I'd be allowed to use before I give him the choices.

Answer
There are two post offices fairly close to me, and one of them (the closest, most convenient one, of course!) is EXTREMELY picky about the flat rate envelopes. They won't allow any tape as reinforcement. If you're lucky, you can sneak a couple of small strips across the zipper "tabs" so that they don't catch on anything and get torn. Other than that, they won't allow any tape whatsoever.
The other post office is very lenient. For the most part, if you can cram it in the envelope, manage to get it closed, and tape the tar out of it, they'll accept it.
Don'tcha just love how consistent the post offices AREN'T.
I don't know about the Global Priority boxes. I've never used them, but am thinking that they cost more than the envelopes.

Answer
I ship 'brown boxes' via Gloabal Priority.
Their 'pre-made' GP boxes never fit the items I'm shipping.
I print a GP label off the USPS website, affix to box, and make certain to mention to the postal working that it's going GP.

Answer
Kathleen can you link to the USPS site that allows you to print GP labels. I've never noticed that one before and sure could use it. Thanks ..

Answer
You have to sign in to get to it.
Here's the sign-in page: https://ecap21.usps.com/cgi-bin/ecap...tAddresses.jsp
or here:

Either way, you have to sign in.

Answer
Right, that's for global express. I was sure they'd have one for global priority by now... for the shipping assistant but nooo... anyways. Thanks.
