This weekend my two year old laptop died taking with it all my assignments, photos and music. Because I use it so much for Tafe through distance ed, my grandmother has kindly given me $1000 to buy a new laptop with.
Im going to need it to have a dvd player, cd burner at least 40gig hard drive, wireless and a PCMCIA slot.
I live in Brisbane and work in Spring Hill so shops in the city area would be really helpful.

This time you'll buy an external HD and do regular backups too, won't you?
The Dell Inspiron 1501 is around $1,000 and has everything you mention except it has the newer Expresscard slot instead of the now obsolete PCMCIA slot. Best of all they'll deliver it to you, so no worries about where the shop is located.

I have wireless internet through a PCMCIA card would that work with the expresscard slot?
I used to have an external HD but it died last year and I never got around to replacing it.
